Think you can still bring a bottle of your favourite Niagara red or Ontario-made whisky to your grandparents’ place in Florida?

Think again, according to trade lawyers and the Canadian Snowbird Association, who say there appears to be no personal exemption when it comes to Donald Trump’s import ban on a wide array of Canadian alcohol products.

That means you can no longer bring even a single bottle of Canadian-made beer, wine or spirits into the U.S. — whether you’re willing to pay duty on it or not, said international trade lawyer Barry Appleton.

“A ban is an absolute prohibition. A tariff is a price a person can pay, and a personal allowance can forgive a duty. Neither can make a prohibited good admissible,” said Appleton, co-director of the Center for International Law at New York Law School, and a fellow at the University of Waterloo’s Balsillie School of International Affairs.

This is kind of funny to read after spending nearly 2 years listening to snowbirds talk about how hard they're not gonna snowbird anymore now that the US is meaner to them. I wonder if the booze ban will be the real last straw.

As an American, curious if younger Canadians have dropped drinking as hard as Americans have?

Major US alcohol distributors and makers, brewers are going bankrupt or panicking, it's sea change here--and that was before the self-inflicted trade war and disastrous foreign policy approach. Course the US alcohol industry followed it up by charging more for 0.0 beer...

Weed is legal here coast to coast. Yes, there is less drinking.

While weed isn’t legal at the federal level in the US it’s legal in many states and dispensaries are almost if not more ubiquitous than in Canada assuming you don’t live in a conservative state.

Personally I drink more for the taste than the alcohol now, and I switched to low-alcholol or alcohol-free beers and mocktails.

Yea, 7% IPAs are out, 3% craft ales or bitters are in for me. Sits better in my stomach and has plenty of flavor.

It fuckin' sucks because up until a few years ago I was all over any 2-3.5% beers I could find but the options to choose from were near non existent. I got diagnosed with though celiac and can't drink beer anymore and suddenly the ultra light beers are everywhere, mocking me :(

Pretty much, yeah. Legalized weed kinda nicks the easy-access inebriation that alcohol was kind of reliant on as a market, and then there's just more and more data that illustrates just how harmful alchohol is even with low consumption. Plus, booze is just really expensive here. If you're in Ontario, it is like 40-50 bucks for a 40z spirit, or about 4-5 bucks per tall boy. Comparatively, I can grow a few weed plants in my backyard for less than 150 bucks in the plants and supplies, and provide for the whole village if I wanted to.

If a Canadian is still choosing to vacation in the US, especially long-term, I'm not sure they fall under what I would call 'decent'.

If that were the case, the fascism wouldn't be as successful here as it is. Or did you forget that the people here were a month away from electing PP until Trump swung the election for anyone critical of him specifically?

Oh, so if it's "everywhere," that doesn't indicate a fundamental sickness in Canadian culture if the people here didn't view genocide rhetoric as a deal-breaker, they're just doing what everyone else is doing. It's worth noting that the admin that did win (and is wildly popular compared to previous admins) has also been eroding indigenous sovereignty rights, openly supported the invasion of Iran, and lifted environmental and agricultural industrial restrictions.

What exactly is your issue with Americans, then?

I guess I see more from under this rock than you do in Australia. Don't run then condemn those who can't, it's shitty.

Well, now you're just self reporting all over this thread. "Oh yeah bud? Well would you be so tolerant of immigrants of they were from what I think is a homogenously depraved culture?" You should move here, you'd fit right in with the snowbirds, eh?

The only people I don't want to live around are those who support harmful social orders, and I don't believe that anyone is incapable of unlearning their support for those harmful social orders. I've known many Americans who come here either for safety or for opportunity, and they're no worse than the snowbirds who are born with this privilege and sneer at the prospect of anyone else even trying for it.

    fuck off.

This person didn't know how to criticize someone they disagree with besides saying they're conservative, the rest of the thread should make it obvious that I'm not. They made a comment about US immigration into Canada fully expecting it to be some sort of gotcha, but when I said that I'm fine with immigration and more fine with immigrants than conservatives born here, they didn't know how else to respond.

No idea why these comments were removed or why they were banned, so they must have done something in another thread.

Saying that it is safe to assume that affluent Canadians are decent people suggests little experience with affluent Canadians, or an affluent Canadian with no self-awareness.

Funny to read this right after Thanksgiving, where I met no fewer than 6 snowbirds who thought Muslims and South Asians are one of Canada's biggest problems right now; second to the US, of course.

edit: Ugh, I just realized this is the same dick who said that people are weak for not fighting the state even though they moved to Australia and don't intend to come help in that fight. They go on here to say that it is conservative to support immigration, and that they are against American immigration (apparently they're special enough that it's fine to emigrate) but are supposedly not a conservative.

What a funny coincidence specifically in this context, starting to see a pattern here. This is a person who is mad that Americans make their own harmful values look bad, not someone who is angered by harmful values.

lol. Literally, the discussion was about how the international student cap* wasn't enough, and Palestinians shouldn't get special treatment if they are "antisemitic," or make fun of soldiers. I couldn't imagine a better analogue.

Fuck off. It's good to be critical of the US, but if you're going to use it to whitewash Canada, you're a problem for all of us.
