I guess this is how we win. Bankrupt the city

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 37 points 2 days ago (2 children)

LAPD budget for 2025: $2.14 billion. Works out to just over $41 million a week.

Being that they are already on salary I assume, I wonder how much it really was "more than normal".

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago

I can't find a good resource for the exact pay formula they use, but cops are definitely eligible for overtime pay, which has apparently blown out their budget to the extent that the city is taking out a $17m loan to pay them (arc)

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Truly a thing that must only be wondered at. Where could one possibly find the answer?

The city has spent more than $29 million to cover LAPD overtime and costs associated with declaring a citywide tactical alert, according to the controller.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So further review shows they average over $4 million a week on overtime.

So I guess we could surmise it was around $25 million more than normal.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's assuming they didn't also do the regular overtime on top of this and that the City Controller didn't account for normal spending.

Sure, we could also ask why they only asked for $17 million to pay off the overtime as well, but we would just be going in circles, haha. I'm more impressed than they will pay 17 million off in 90 days when they are operating at a loss in some way that they have "$1 billion in debt" supposedily.

This is all overwhelmingly what Trump wants. He hates my entire state (California).

[–] OfCourseNot@fedia.io 8 points 2 days ago

I'm not sure it's possible to bankrupt a city like LA, they can go into massive debt and you and your children will end up paying it. They can also take the money from elsewhere in the budget: a shepherd will stop feeding the sheep but not the dogs.

[–] gressen@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Is the city really your enemy? Wouldn't bankrupting the city play into Trump's hands?

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago

Is the city really your enemy?

So long as LAPD officers keep defending ICE kidnappings, yeah

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It doesn't matter what you do, the narrative is not based on truth. The city will either suffer because of "rioting communist lefties", or succeed because of Trump's "amazingness" either will play into his hands and Trump lies about everything.

The benefit of making the city suffer is sending a message to other cities who may still have to make this choice. Fash costs cash.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And who do you think ends up paying for that?

If you truly believe the outcome is essentially the same, then why would you do something so self-sabotaging as bankrupting your own city.

Short sighted and foolish.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So your solution is to give in to fascism?

Not fighting back is "short sighted and foolish".

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah that's exactly what I said 🙄
