While cloned fonts may not be illegal, it certainly wasn’t in the spirit of the campaign.

The music was definitely used illegally though.

The music AND the font? Jeez.

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 7 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

How exactly does one even make a whole new font?

[–] expr@programming.dev 7 points 18 hours ago

It's not that hard, technically speaking, though of course it takes skill to come up with a set of glyphs that work well together and such.

Also, there are websites that can scan your handwriting and turn it into a font file, which is pretty cool. I have a font I created of my wife's handwriting.

Basically draw every character individually as a vector graphic and put them all together into a font file with something like FontForge.

If your car can't run without its firmware, and you download a new version of it.. Etc.

Anyway, I've heard that this ad possibly resulted in more piracy as people became aware that it was even possible to save money by downloading movies and music. Hard to measure though.

Frankly it's kinda wild that cars are basically whole computers these days.

[–] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 4 points 20 hours ago

Everything's computer.

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 4 points 1 day ago

even more so if you think about the newer ones recording their environment, the whole neighborhood etc, with cameras and/or radar/lidar

I am going to download an entire car the moment it is technically possible and feasible to do so with a sufficiently large 3d printer. I don't even care if cars are still a thing by that point, I will do so simply out of principle, to be able to say "Yes I absolutely would download a car, I just did!"

[–] Dima@feddit.uk 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I mean the original anti-piracy ad said you wouldn't steal a car, because they were trying to equate digital piracy with physical theft, it's the meme edits that say you wouldn't download a car

[–] dzsimbo@lemm.ee 1 points 2 hours ago

I will copyright some schematics so everyone can enjoy the thrill of piracy to really drive the point home.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 50 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You could just download it, no need to actually print the thing for no reason

I would buy a larger drive to do that though, just to say I did

[–] piccolo@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

How much ram do i need to download first?

[–] metaStatic@kbin.earth 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

in which case there are already open source cars out there to download.

[–] fubbernuckin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 day ago

Ooh, do you know of any good ones? I wanna download a car!

[–] ogmios@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago

Yes I absolutely would download a car

This campaign joins D.A.R.E. as one of the most ironically unsuccessful campaigns of all time.

[–] ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If I could download a car and use it in real life, I certainly would.

[–] skankhunt42@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If I could let you copy mine I'd be the first to offer a torrent.

[–] flicker@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 16 hours ago

I would download your car, not because I need one, but just to seed it.

Also, just a week or two ago, I DID download a Rimac Nevera.

In Cyberpunk 2077, but still..

As evil as Graham Lineham is, I do need to post the parody of these forwarders that was in The IT Crowd.

looks up Graham Lineham

If ever there was a case for separating the art from the artist (while still being careful not to support him monetarily or otherwise)..

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 8 points 1 day ago

Hey at least his ex-wife is probably a lot more happy now. Good for her

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

After an episode of The IT Crowd was criticised as transphobic, Linehan became involved in anti-transgender activism. He argues that transgender activism endangers women, and has likened the use of puberty blockers to Nazi eugenics. Linehan says his views have lost him work and ended his marriage

I think he's just mentally ill and his state has just deteriorated with time.

[–] SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org 17 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sadly not, most mentally ill people aren't like him, and also it is obvious he is in a cult as this is exactly what cults do to people.

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah my understanding is the musician licensed the music only to be shown at a few live events, like film festivals, but that PSA was on an entire era of DVDs.

[–] seaturtle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

What an irony.
