"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

It's afraid!

AI doomerism has 'done a lot of damage to Corporations' and is 'not helpful to Corporations'

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Fuck Jensen Huang for making AI worse than any doomer could have ever dreaded

[–] despite_velasquez@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

I've seen slopfluencers that are associated with Nvidia push this EXACT line that Jensen has almost on command, it's so uncanny. They will defend their points and call your critique disinformation if you point out that the data centre buildup and centralisation of power in the hands of 5 companies is bad for our societies

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

Says the guy happily driving up prices of computer parts while adding to the massive resource suck and garbage heap that is AI.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 13 points 1 day ago

We were on track to useful AI.

Then the MBAs got involved.

[–] greygore@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When 90% of the messaging is all around the end of the world and the pessimism, and I think we're scaring people from making the investments in AI that makes it safer, more functional, more productive, and more useful to society.

Yes, lack of investment is the biggest problem around AI right now.

[–] flango@lemmy.eco.br 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bro, trust me, just one billion. One more, just one... really, bro, listen.... just one billion...

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Actually, more like one more trillion at this point...

[–] motruck@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

Stop spreading CEO rhetoric these people only care about enriching themselves and everything they say is toward that end.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

Translation: the plebs are making it hard for me to exploit them and get filthy rich even though I'm a fleshbag that can't take monies to the afterlife.

Kind of tired of reasonable criticism and concerns about the future being labeled "doomerism". It's a thought-terminating cliche from people who are invested in you not thinking about it.

[–] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Isn’t his claim that criticism of AI will harm society a kind of doomerism?

Huang’s doomerism doomerism is getting me down!

Same dude who said don't learn coding cause AI will do it for you btw.

[–] Bazell@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The same dude who got mostly profits selling GPUs to the AI companies.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Telling people not to buy my shitty product is really hurtful to my bottom line!

[–] DoctorNope@lemmy.world 70 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s not enough, guys. Just about everyone with a 401(k) or a pension is giving us truckloads of money, but it’s not enough. We’re cooking the books, but it’s not enough. We’re paying OpenAI to buy our GPUs and IT’S STILL NOT FUCKING ENOUGH.

It must be the AI doomers. Those morons, those Luddites! AI has amazing benefits, like agreeing with people so hard they go insane, or counting the letters in “strawberry”, or undressing children! And those people think the same technology could cause the end of the world?

Those doomers are definitely the paper jam in the money printer. We gotta get rid of them. Then the money can really flow in!

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It really is a fucking sickness. It's just never enough.

[–] hakase@lemmy.zip 118 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Fuck Jensen and his shitty jackets.

Youre not helpful to the society Jensen. Fucking, purchasing all production capabilities or limited chips, with “imaginary” money, gotten for product NOT YET built, for data-centers NOT YET built for shitty service nobody wants, that eats gallons of water every second.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You know your product is good when you blame "customers" for not using it.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 12 points 1 day ago

We're supposed to be the customer and the competition. Very normal

Fuck off.

[–] recursive_recursion@piefed.ca 60 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

AI doomerism will continue until consumer memory supply improves.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ehhh, yeah. No Jensen. Get back to me with that once your stock is 10 bucks a share and I'll believe that nvidia is suffering for anti AI sentiment.

How about, you focus on GPUs that don't cost 3 months income? Better yet, pivot to making memory as well as graphics chips. FFS.

[–] ryper@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

They design graphics chips; they don't manufacture them. Nvidia designing memory wouldn't help with the RAM shortage when all the manufacturers are already running at capacity.

Fuck Jensen and his cronies.

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 41 points 2 days ago

frequent warnings about AI are dissuading people from making investments in AI's improvement.

I really don't think that's it, Jensen. I think investors are realizing that it's a bubble and that investments are becoming increasingly unlikely to realize returns as it becomes more and more obvious that AI has almost no path to profitability outside of niche use cases, rather than the automation revolution that silicon valley has been hyping it up to be.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

AI is not helpful to society

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Jensen is not helpful to society. He's done a lot of damage.

[–] FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website 31 points 2 days ago

Jenson Huang is doing a lot of damage there.

[–] Saledovil@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 days ago (4 children)

AI doomerism typically refers to the belief that AI will rise up against us and kill us all. Given that current "AI" is just a guessing machine, that won't happen, barring substantial breakthroughs. The end-of-the-world narratives are basically marketing for AI, as in, "hey, if this thing got any smarter, it would destroy the world".

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The real doomerism is that AI will take over teaching and we will have a generation that only knows what AI has lied to them about.

AI will be used to target people for death and already has been used as such. Imagine a world where you are incorrectly judged as a problem and executed when in reality you just share a terrorist's handle.

AI will be used to create custom persuasive propaganda on the fly. It will be used to manipulate voting and to help take away our rights. It will be controlled by the uber wealthy and will be their mouthpiece spreading their bullshit far and wide.
