I don't think this is true for eggs. I've read that the egg-laying chickens are completely detached from those raised for their meat. Perhaps best demonstrated with the recent egg shortages having no impact to poultry prices.

Exactly this. Lots of companies have figured out that filling our landfills with cheap plastic crap is a lucrative business model. In this case, it's cheaply made and expensive to replace - making it hugely profitable. Shareholders would be furious if they were to fix this issue.
I have and believe it or not, you end up with pretty perfect poops. It solidifies in your gut.
