Fine? Sure. But the proper setting, especially on a higher end rice cooker, will result in better rice.

I had to put all my stuff in storage then move across the country recently. I did not bring my cuckoo rice cooker with me, and damn I didn't realize how spoilled I've gotten. The rice I'm cooking in a cheap one just isn't as good. I think it is over-cooking the rice, but it's actually hard to dial in

this reminds me of how my friend recently used our entire allotment of coffee grounds to dial in the coffee maker at the place we were staying

ten probably hungover people the morning after a wedding, and this guy used all the grounds to make end up with 2/3 of a pot of coffee, then dipped before anyone else but me woke up

love the guy, but that was not what I wanted to enter the kitchen to see

Wait, what do you mean "dial in"? I'm unfamiliar with this term in the context of coffee makers. Do they need to be calibrated?

Like, did he make a batch, taste it, say "too weak," toss it, then make another, taste, "too strong," toss, and so on until he gets one that's "just right"?

    If so, what an asshole.

Or did he just dump an entire can of grounds in the hopper, brew a 2/3 pot, then dump the resulting motor oil in a travel mug before dipping out?

If so, still, what an ass.

Not only is that selfish, it's also kinda stupid.

Like did he really need to pour it out because it didn't suit him? If anything he could have moved it to a different container so that other people could still have some.

But also it's like... if you don't know the right ratio it's not hard to ask. If there's a scooper it's usually like one scoop per two cups of water. Getting the precision down to ± three decimal places isn't exactly necessary.

    But whatever. I digress...

I've heard great things about the Cuckoos, my little Zojirushi is perfect though.

Damn you people are wealthy or just really really love your rice.

Spend a couple hundred dollars once and never have to buy a rice cooker again, and have perfect rice every time. The total cost of my machine up to now is probably a couple pennies per batch of rice made (if that). They can also do more than just rice, I regularly steam veggies and even cook meat while my rice cooks.

I'm of the opinion that if you have to cook your rice in a $600 machine, you like your machine more than you like rice

An instant pot does perfectly good rice too. Though it takes a bit of trial to get then ratios right.

I own a rice cooker. I admit that it makes better rice more consistently. But I still use a pot on the stove most of the time because I can get it done quicker, but at the expense of it sometimes being mushy.

If you put in less water than the rice needs, it will result in a chewier texture, like undercooked pasta. Too much water, and it will cook down too much, become gluey and mushy. Perfectly cooked rice is incredible, and I didn't realize how good plain rice could be til I was an adult and had it prepared correctly.

It's like coffee. There are troglodytes out there who will tell you instant is just as good as anything else.
