Someone do the math comparing total cost of Iran war to the cost of buying everyone an EV and rooftop solar.

    Napkin math disclaimer

Cost of Iran war so far: $43.6b

Number of people in the US with drivers license: 242.1m

    Average EV cost: $55k

    Number of households: 133m

    Average rooftop solar cost: $22.5k

    Cost to give everyone EVs: 242.1m × $55k = $13.3b

    Cost to give every household rooftop solar: 133m × $22.5k = $3b

    Total cost: $16.3b

We'd have enough to do it almost 3 times.

You forgot to multiply the k. You're off by a factor of 1000.

Nah, I messed up looking at the answer, not with the math.

Edit: it's wild that I was downvoted for admitting my mistake.

You messed up the math, so how is this admitting your mistake?

No, I didn't. The math was fine, it was me not counting the places in the answer correctly that was the problem.

No, it's not. The numbers used to derive the answer were correct. I did not forget to multiply by the K. I read the answer wrong when I transferred it.

My math was correct, my reading wasn't.

    Cost to give every household rooftop solar: 133m × $22.5k = $3b

Should be "133m × $22.5k = $3000b"... or 3 trillion. You don't think the right side of the equation is part of the math?

Apparently I'm not the only one making reading errors here.

If you think I have made an error, feel free to point it out. I prefer being corrected than being wrong.

I've never understood why people are so reluctant to admit mistakes. Insecurity? I have no problem with it.

The person I initially responded to said that the reason I was off by a factor of 1000 was because I forgot to multiply by the K in the price.

I said the actual reason I was off by 1000 was because when I glanced at the calculator I read the result wrong. The math was right, my reading comprehension wasn't.

I was never arguing that the answer I put in the comment wasn't wrong. I even edited it.
