RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

I can't see the point of getting on the internet for the sole purpose of taking somebody like say Carol Burnett, who by all accounts was a nice person, and talking about her show, which was very popular, and saying "I don't like it or her, I didn't find it/them funny."

I guess I'm saying I don't really understand unpopularopinion posts. They seem like institutionalized trolling.

Hmm, perhaps this is a unpopular opinion.

Is this your unpopular opinion about unpopular opinion being unpopular in Lemmy? ...sorry, I couldn't resist.

Serious now. My issue with those opinion subs is that they were always crap - either they'd be about popular shit being posted as unpopular for karma, or political soapboxes for the foulest PoVs.

Opinions : Social Media :: Assholes : People. "Everyone's got one but no one wants to hear it." My dad used to always say, lol.

Always heard it: "everyone has one and they all stink."

...have you ever noticed that your own farts... smell ok...

I think it's more that Reddit suffers from a lot of engagement farming. Unpopular Opinion is an easy one to game.

Don't forget the other sinister side...

"I purposefully chose a mate for the wrong reasons, but I need everybody to talk about how that person is an asshole, and my selection of partner is NOT to be impugned!"

[–] courageousstep@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago

I saw it as a hotbed of racism and sexism with a ton of awful posts, so I never wanted to visit that sub.

Also, yeah, why what makes someone want to spend energy focusing on negativity when they could just…move on with life and let people enjoy things?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I just hated how they were almost never actually unpopular opinions.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Because it doesn't work. No matter if they say to upvote unpopular opinions, humans generally want to upvote things they agree with. So it can't be an actual unpopular opinion. So people start to word popular (or at least not supremely unpopular) opinions as though they're unpopular, get upvotes, repeat.

I'm okay with this post, a lot of people don't like it seems

But truthfully, I have found most unpopular opinions to just be statements of personal preference , and those are completely pointless

Okay, you think chocolate is better than vanilla, who gives a fuck

[–] breadguy@kbin.earth 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

every popular sub is full of fake bait ai posts. aitah and aio are unusable

[–] easily3667@lemmus.org 1 points 2 days ago

You're strange

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I don't think that's inherent to the unpopular opinion format, a post could just as easily be a "I like this thing everybody else hates". People can and frequently do use it just to troll, but that's a problem with those people not the community.
