"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

That's a telling understatement in that headline! They really want to downplay the rejection of major corporation CEOs, at least he wasn't as rancid (but he does support rancid corpo activities like what the students were protesting). At least he had the decency to not be Eric Schmidt and tell them that they essentially wasted their time working hard to get their degrees because LLMs were going to take their jobs away. Fucking losers, for different reasons.

The future will be stupid will if we let these bastards get their way...Fight back through diplomacy and other methods if need be. That is the way. The French understand the correct method for making sure things don't go to utter shit in their country.

Capitalism needs to go. That's the cause of this shit.

It's feudalism 2.0 with extra microplastics.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 2 points 4 days ago

Yeah, I know what the cause is...It's just marshaling the fight against Capitalism is the issue. If we want it done and dusted it will be an ordeal because the billionaires are not going to let go of their rotted and corruption filled system without a fight. The people do have power, we just have to realize and wield it against them. What comes after will also be hard because we have to replace it with a system that has a level playing field built into it, one that doesn't disadvantage a person for being poor, etc.

I feel like it for sure stops being dozens when it surpasses 144

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

After that, it’s just gross

If they don’t want to commit to h “hundreds” BBC could have gone with “scores” or even the venerable NoCal “hella”

"At least twelve"

What I don't understand is: Who books these speakers? The sentiment of young people is against AI. Why book an AI salesman? Are the responsibles not aware about their students?

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 32 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I guess the conclusion that “universities that exploit their students are in the same power structure as corporations that exploit their customers and employees” is unacceptable to you?

The system is fractally corrupt.

[–] paw@feddit.org 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

So you mean, ttey are as disconnected from the reality of young people as their commancement speech speekers? I guess you're right, and that's sad.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

What's sad is that tuition goes up a few significant percentage points over inflation every year and has for decades, even as teaching is off-loaded to slave labor adjuncts.

College is the initiation of citizenry as cash cows for the extractive capitalist system. Not surprising that where you went to college functions as social branding.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Totally, there be some DUMB fucking Ivy Leaguers running society. It's not an education, it's a frathouse.

Genuinely, one thing that got clear the older I get is your education doesn't mean shit, who you know does.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah, and what I've realized is that if you're not connectwd, sucking up to superiors is worth being 10x better at your job.

I am still hopeful that we are just a couple of malicious lines of code away from rendering this whole AI abomination inoperable, or at least so heavily crippled with various security measures that it is practically unusable. One can dream, I guess …..

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 15 points 6 days ago

They still haven't found any viable solution to prompt injection. Every time they put an AI agent in charge of anything important, that's a huge security risk.

The AIs are very stupid, and it's trivially easy to trick them into violating security protocols.

[–] WanderingThoughts 10 points 6 days ago (2 children)

EU is doing that by putting "you are liable for your AI" in law code. Big Tech was not amused.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 1 points 5 days ago

I am shocked we are fighting back AT ALL. And I don't expect it to last.

[–] dickalan@lemmy.world 0 points 6 days ago

are you sure that's not just in Germany because of debacle with AI summaries there

[–] honesthenery@thelemmy.club 10 points 5 days ago

Fuck everybody that works at or for google.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 9 points 6 days ago

Seems be quite a bit more dozen’t it?

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 5 points 5 days ago

Entire dozens? Is this the civil war I've been hearing about? Do I hoard toilet paper now?

[–] danciestlobster@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago

I don't know the details of this specific protest but I will say, media is notorious for underplaying participation in these things. We've hosted protests of 500+ people that got described in the news as dozens, or 5000+ that gets described as hundreds.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The time to hoard is before you need it bro.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

...um.... yes?
