Summary

The U.S. deported 238 Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison using the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

Internal documents show 75% had no known criminal record. Some, like a makeup artist and a soccer player, had pending asylum claims.

The Trump administration claimed links to the Tren de Aragua gang, citing tattoos and social media, but lawyers and experts say evidence is flimsy.

Despite a court order to halt the deportation, flights proceeded. Critics warn the move bypasses due process and violates international human rights standards.

What you’re seeing is a display of pure power. A flex of totally unchecked authority.

The next ones to join could be you and your family, and there’s little to nothing that you can do about it. Without due process, who used to say they are not all perfectly legitimate US citizens?

I suggest putting on some weight. We’re going to need it in the work camps.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 20 points 5 days ago (2 children)

We are going to see at midnight tonight how unchecked the power is.

https://www.npr.org/2025/04/04/nx-s1-5352448/judge-orders-the-trump-administration-to-return-man-who-was-mistakenly-deported-el-salvador

My understanding of what's going on here... And admittedly, the Trump administration is moving very fast, the courts are not moving fast enough. However that's kind of the way the courts have always worked. It feels like the Trump administration is trying to exploit this.

However, if that man is not returned by midnight, my assumption is that there will be a Patsy that will be held in contempt of court.

So we are now in a game theory square

The man returns, the man does not return.

Someone is punished, no one is punished.

Ideally, by this time tomorrow that man is returned and someone is punished.

The worst case scenario is that by midnight tonight that man is not returned and no one is punished. If that happens we are in a very dark space.

All three other alternatives offer hope, with the one square I mentioned actually being a very good sign in general despite the current horrors.

It's insufficient to punish "someone", because that person is likely just a patsy, as you suggest.

What I would like to see is the judge asking the lowest person on the rung, under oath, "Who ordered this? Tell me or I'll hold you in contempt", and then when that person answers they ask the named person the same question, until they find someone who actually matters, and hold them in contempt until the man is returned. (And, hold them directly responsible for the condition the man is returned in).

The President may be immune from the consequences of his actions, but people serving under him are not.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Oh I agree, the patsy is the first domino, though. The dominos get larger as they continue to fall, ideally. As you put it.

Things are dark but there is not yet an absence of light.

[–] Zron@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Convincing all the little stooges that they won’t be protected is the only way to course correct from this.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

We need to convince them the only way they will be protected is to rat out their bosses. (And then, actually protect them from the brownshirts.)

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

USSC blocked it, so welcome to the dark side.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Wrong, they paused it. This is one of the 2 squares I didn't mention that is still positive, while horrific.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

They do keep "pausing" consequences every time it matters for 47 though.

Justice delayed is justice denied. It also must be super reassuring to all those people in ~~the concentration camps~~ CECOT.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Okay, this is not "the dark square" though.

Your soundbite is nice but I am here to discuss facts of matters and not play 'witty quip' tit for tat.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 0 points 4 days ago

The fact of the matter is that Trump has spent his whole lie dodging responsibility by just throwing enough bullshit at the system that it ground to a halt. It was unable to get through prosecuting Trump for four years until he got into power again, and then all cases got dismissed.

What is it that you expect to happen? Or what is it that you think that there is a chance that it will happen to stop this or even reverse this?

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, how many jews at Dachau do you think had a criminal background?

[–] Fleur_@hilariouschaos.com 1 points 3 days ago

That's a stupid fucking statement. They did not deserve to be there regardless of if they were criminals or not

[–] notsure@fedia.io 33 points 5 days ago (1 children)

....didn't Germany do something similar to this in 1935-6? just checking to see if history is doing that repeating thing...

[–] wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I just can't imagine how hopeless these people must feel. It's a fucking nightmare. You're accused of something you haven't done (not that anyone deserves this, even if they are criminals), there's no way for you to even make anyone listen to you and you're dumped in a prison in a foreign country with no hope of ever getting out? It's just.. jesus christ, the injustice of it all is simply heartbreaking.

To think that millions of people are actually cheering for this is terrifying. If I were American, I'd be terrified. If "illegals" can't have due process, then nobody has due process, because how are you going to prove you're a citizen without due process? They can literally grab you off the street and send you to a concentration camp and there's nothing you can do about it, because all they have to do is claim you're illegal.

I honestly don't understand how all these people in power are even still alive.

[–] xantonin@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I feel like not enough people are outraged about spending $6 million taxpayer dollars to El Salvador for these "prisoners" either. Where is the government efficiency?

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

They're going to up the cost of El Salvadoring to the billions, and then if you mention that it costs billions to El Salvador innocent people, dumb republicans will think you're pulling their legs, because "billion" is clearly a made up word to smear those fine people in the party.

(Yes, there are people who think "Billion" was made up for a gag in one of the Austin Powers movies.)

Trump should be charged with crimes against humanity

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I remember looking at a documentary about America in the early colonial days in the 17th century. Apparently it took a while for racism to truly become a thing, and the absolute first black people to come in were also indentured servants. After racism started becoming codified at one point they reenslaved some blacks who were freed or never slaves to begin with.

What we are seeing is the precedent that was set back then being reused. Pulling absolute random people and just selling them into slavery.

It also makes sense that most of the people have no criminal records. People who are violent criminals, or have a violent criminal history, are often difficult to control. By getting people who have no criminal history and treating them like murderers and drug smugglers, makes it easy to dehumanize them and demonize them but also still easy to control.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

All of them should be immediately eligible for US citizenship, assuming any of them want it at this point. Along with getting a shit ton of money to try to heal from this. How the fuck can this possibly be made right, even if every single victim of this is removed from the prison?

[–] 1337@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Giving them US citizenship is like giving disgruntled customers a credit to use at the same store.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 days ago

If those customers lived at and had families at the store, yeah. If they still want citizenship at this point they should get it.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I hope we get them back all unharmed and I hope this takes down the Trump presidency.

[–] zayanjones@feddit.uk 2 points 4 days ago

This raises serious questions about due process and whether these migrants were given fair hearings before being deported to a mega-prison

[–] diffusive@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If I was in the leadership of Tren de Aragua gang I would start incentivising the use of svastica, iron cross. The number of people with these tattoos would clearly be part of the gang, right?

[–] Shardikprime@lemmy.world -1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

If you were part of the tren de Aragua leadership you wouldn't even know what a swastika is and what history it has.

You'd probably have a body count in the high triple digits or more and had experience with torture and mutilation since a young age

You don't even know what you are talking about

[–] diffusive@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Dude you don’t know me nor where I grew up

Their leader started illegal activities when he was 17 (wiki) so unlikely to have experienced torture and mutilation since a young age. Also no matter the industry, leaders of large organisations (from religions to criminal gangs) are never stupid and/or ignorants

But this is beyond the point, it was clearly something that will never happen

But, sure, say a random thing to a stranger on internet to look badass when you don’t know anything anyway
