Thank you for sharing the original because I came across this hilarious comic also

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

Genuinely, thank you for the original. I see this edited into a meme so often, I couldn't even remember what the original was.

It's not just possible, it's the obvious choice. Google search has been shit for a long time.

I can recommend:

Ecosia - donates their profits to environmental causes

Startpage - private and if i recall EU based

Duckduckgo - private but american(?)

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago

startpage is owned by an american company

i'd recommend qwant, it's the one i use. private and hosted in france

[–] zurohki@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Kagi. Because it's a paid service, they aren't constantly looking for ways to sell their user base's time, attention and data to their real customers. You are the customer.

Don't want AI? Turn it off and you'll never see it again.

also with kagi you can authenticate privately with the privacy pass protocol https://help.kagi.com/kagi/privacy/privacy-pass.html

If only there were a way to stop using Google. Alas…

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 29 points 1 week ago

This has got to be ragebait.

Stop using Screwgle

bonus: most of these (and some of the other suggestions on this thread, like SearXNG) protect your privacy better than Google does

Regular ddg also just has a setting where you can turn it off. Is this different?

[–] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 12 points 1 week ago

Yep, it's switched off by default. I like to share this, because I can send it to non-techy people and they instantly have a working search engine, without fiddling with settings.

You don't need to turn it off each time you clear your cookies.

i use it because i use a browser extension that creates temporary throwaway containers replacing all "No Container" to keep site cookies isolated intelligently

Duck duck go

You can already do this. Just append -ai to the end of the search

You can edit your browsers default Google search URL pattern to just always have -ai at the end.

[–] Niklast@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

You can also edit the search url to default to the web tab, which only shows link results

[–] root@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

SearXNG will not include AI overviews

[–] this@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

SearXNG is the single best experience you can get for a search engine imo.

Except when only search result come from mwmbl and yacy because other are banned/captcha/tieout.

[–] canniest_tod@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

I find duckduckgo's results more useful/reliable and you absolutely can disable the ai.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

Laughs in Kagi

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

There is. Still works. It redirects from All to Web tab.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

There must be a way because it no longer appears for me on my phone, but still pops up if I use another device I don't use much for browsing, like my PC. IDK how I managed to turn it off tho. Maybe it just got sick of me swearing at it.

[–] 98vesselsreptile@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

You can add -ai to your search and it will do this

[–] GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Disable AI extension on Firefox-based browsers.

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't mind ai, I just don't want their ai

[–] cockmushroom@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

Use a different engine?

[–] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

ewwww chromepunk utopia and it still somehow looks like LA? Hard pass

[–] the_xboxkiller@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

If you change your location to France in the region settings (or vpn, I presume) it will turn off the default AI results. Worked for me.

[–] PillowD@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

put a swear word like fucking in your query
