Sure. But just think how much more resources you could reclaim by simply not having it at all.

This was my solution as soon as they floated the ID thing. Said bye to my groups and uninstalled without a single look back.

Keeping an eye on fluxer. It looked promising. But yeah, xmpp matrix etc are solid.

made a fluxer account, seems to have all the pros of discord, but it needs more people.

Discord is getting too big for its own good, governments are already on top of it. For the EU at least, it's likely it will be branded as "social media" and receive a total ban unless if you show your police ID.

Yup same here. Left all servers, messaged the handful of people I chatted with there that I'm leaving and to add me on Matrix if they want to keep in touch, then uninstalled.

I setup my own Matrix homeserver back when discord announced the global age stuff earlier this year, and its been rock solid since then with the couple friends that also weren't happy with discord. With it being proven reliable for many months now, I don't really need discord for anything

What does it take to get voice/video chat working on Matrix? I see Element has their own server stack, but I can't tell how open it is, and that's kinda the big thing that's keeping me away from trying to go harder on Matrix.

MatrixRTC is part of the Matrix protocol these days, so if the client is compliant, it should work on any server setup for it. I use synapse and livekit, and it works great. Its all just one docker compose stack

I was using element mostly, but recently switched to Sable. There are a few more that also support voice and video I believe

    Am I missing something here?

Wasn't that the original purpose of Discord?

    Like, for gamers by gamers?

Everyone loses the fucking plot so fast these days.

This is actually what pisses me off with modern tech, we have soo much computing power that we have forgotten to properly optimize.

What used to be a software problem, writing code efficiently has turned into a hardware problem, with only one solution:

Throw more computing power at it.

Why not just reduce resources all the time? Why does it need to be a bloated mess only when I'm not gaming if they can just turn a switch on to make it less bloated?

Resource management comes in many different flavors. Most computers allow you to use every resource it has at its disposal to accomplish a task (rendering graphics, processing workloads, gaming, etc), and that would really suck to have your system just decide it should nuke that process. It doesn't really know what you prioritize, so Instead it runs and compromises the best it can until the dam breaks. But gaming is a little less of a gray area, its nearly always the main focus of the user, so its easy to draw a line there.

There are systems that are far more opinionated about resource usage that will reign in processes. Like iOS is a good example (The divide is usually desktop and mobile OSs). It prioritizes UI, battery life, and animation fluidity over any process and will kill anything that threatens it.

There are applications out there you can use to limit resource usage per app, so you can limit the resources of bloated browser engines that masquerade as native apps.

  • Remarkable! A "game mode" for gamers? On Discord no less! What will they think of next? A "stock ticker mode" for financial analysts? A "metronome mode" for musicians? A "mirror mode" for make-up artists? They are truly thinking out-of-the-box to expand their user base.

Maybe they should have the lower resource abusing version on all the time?

This is how the Fluxer switch begins

I have still no idea why people say "go fluxer". This still has no federation, so appart from a few tricks, it’s no better than any preexistent solution. A lot of promises published at the right time earlier this year. But everyone can do that at the ai age..

Its a problem where the 'original' goal is never really kept in mind with how things are available in the future. I'm sure when I looked at something "I'm going to use it for x" and then five years later "I'm going to use this for y".

This drift exists especially in technology.

Mumble is much better for gaming. It's lightweight and doesn't use the GPU at all. Since it's self hosted, there is no ID verification.

Mumble is also ONLY voice chat. The problem is that Discord is so many useful things at the same time - text chat, voice chat, video chat, and game streaming, all integrated together seamlessly - that it's hard to move off of when you need a whole suite of applications to replace it.

This is not true. Mumble does text chat as well. Please don't spread misinformation.

I'm not sure you could say that Mumble does text chat. What it has barely qualifies as text chat at all, much less fully-featured text chat. It exists as much to communicate system messages as anything else.

It's no where near as well integrated though is it? Unless they have completely revamped the client.

I'm not sure what you mean by a text chat functionality being more or less integrated? Integrated with what? OP stated that Mumble exclusively does voice chat, which is simply wrong. You can send text messages to users and channels.

I assume they want a fully rich text channel: Markdown, embedded images/audio, reactions, code blocks, URL previews, etc.

They won't be happy returning to a text channel which is just text.

Sure, that doesn't mean that Mumble doesn't have text chat though, does it?

Why would it? How am I sending text messages to multiple users and channels daily, if Mumble doesn't do text chat? Please explain to me what kind of black magic I am channeling.

Because every modern chat application allows for more than text chat. Sure the name is 'text chat' so you can take that literally and say "if it allows you to send text its text chat". Its like a phone, if I say here is a phone and hand someone a landline they're gonna be like wtf.

I see this all the time with IRC, people will say lets move to IRC and the discord users will use irc for 5 mins and say its shit because its missing every single basic feature let alone the ones that actually make a platform enticing.

Wonder if it'll fix the BS microstutter in certain games that's caused by the process enforcing high cpu priority, or if I'll have to continue using Process Lasso to force it down to normal and/or remember to close it when not in use...

Sounds like a windows thing, I don’t use windows or discord
