I used to play Murder in the Dark, but now I don't have any friends.

My husband and I have had a running «game» for like 25 years now. Basically anytime I’m able to catch an item he’s thrown or he’s successfully caught something I’ve (badly) thrown, he’ll say «the game continues». Things like, «toss me those keys» kind of things. There are no points and we aren’t keeping track, but aware I guess? when it’s been a streak of more that twice in a row.

    Stop Shots.

My cousin was a bartender and invented the game. He would walk up and down the pointing at the rail liquor under the bar. You get three 'stops' where you say it, he grabs the bottle (still out of sight) and pours some in a shaker, repeat for teo more stops. He'd then shake it up, name it, and pour shots for the players. You were allowed to ask for training wheels; soda back, etc.

Sometimes there would be a beautiful nee thing in the world. A lot of times the drink was a crime against humanity.

A much wider range of drinks available compared to that drinking game where you try and bounce a coin into the receptacle in the middle of the table, if you miss, you put a bit of your drink into it. Whoever scores, can tell somebody else to drink.

I have a friend that plays a weird compliment game with me anytime we see each other. It involves complimenting the other person while making the comment sounds like an insult. You need to get creative with it, the more unique or silly but still sincere the compliment, the better. When things get really heated, it might spiral out to complimenting others by association (e.g. "well YOUR MOTHER is delightful!")

When ever I visit people in Germany I make sure to put my PET bottle that I get for the train in with their empty PET bottles.

Germany has a deposit on them so they will eventually take those empty bottles to the supermarket. However I bought my bottle in Switzerland which does not have deposits on bottles so the machines in Germany won't accept them, which is for them to figure out!

WAY back in the early 90’s we used to go to a bar that played satellite radio. So unlike a jukebox, no one could ever know what song was coming up. Therefore..

The first person to shout out the name the band that wrote the song that is playing makes everyone else drink. Was a wicked fun game on quarter beer night.

Fast forward to modern day times, and it has continued to carry out even when not in bars, so…. Now- walking around a supermarket with the girlfriend, and it’s:

    “Aerosmith, drink!” or,

    Chris De Burgh, drink!

Even if there’s nothing to drink. So, not only has it transcended the years, it also evolved into a non-drinking game.

Quarter beer = a beer for a quarter or a quarter of the price?

I used to play a game with a small group of people called "non-colloquialism" where it was forbidden to use any contractions, abbreviations, slang, etc. There were some contentious rules like whether "fax" was acceptable, but "OK" definitely was not.

What would happen when you broke the rules? Did everyone get a "non-colloquialism jar" and had to put in 10c or something?

Not a massive penalty, it was just that everybody else would be really smug about how uncivilized you were. It could get annoying when you had 5 people doing a performative mockery of a late 19th century aristocratic stereotype in chorus. Lots of "Oh dear" and "I say" and miming of the adjusting of a monocle.

The song game. I feel like a lot of people have come up with it naturally.

One person plays a song. The next person has to then play a song with some sort of connection to it. Like, you could follow the velvet underground's "Sunday Morning" with Nirvana's "Lithium" because it has the line "Sunday morning is every day for all I care". Any connection is valid so long as the group accepts it, but I prefer lyrical ones myself.

That's it. You go around until you lose interest.

I like it as a way to share music, because to do well you typically have to actually listen with their song.

A similar game I’ve played is someone names a word, nothing crazy obscure, and a song with that word in its lyrics. To use your example, maybe “Sunday” and then Lithium. Next person has to come up with a song that has that lyric as well. Go until someone can’t, then start a new word. The one who ended the run could easily be made to take a drink if that’s your setting.

The Special Edition of this game is that you have to sing the line as “proof” that the lyric is in there.

On long drives, the alphabet game. Just watch out the window for signs, license plates, and other stuff outside the vehicle that has text, and see how quickly you can get through the entire alphabet in order.

(Passengers in a vehicle can safely play this, the driver shouldn't.)

Play it alone or with other people.

I usually play it with movie actors, but you can use any characters, fictional or otherwise.

First person picks two characters/actors who never interacted. Let's take Dolly Parton and Tim Curry. Second person/team has to come up with a story involving the two. They can be any age, so it can be 60 year old Dolly mentoring a young Tim, or old Tim being cared for by Dolly aged 30.

I have a friend who loves the shit out of this one: Fuckable - Sexy scale - but with inanimate objects. Fruits, pies, cocktails, cars, trains, etc. There are many alterations to the scale that can be made: Fiona, Sheryl, Britney, Kylie matrix; Fuck = +y, Marry = -y, Kill = +x, ??? = -x; whatever else
