"Don't trust the liberals, they will betray you!"
post
i guess that trans people weren't "abandoned" by liberals if liberals weren't by their side from the start
They 100% abandon us regularly. They don't believe in trans rights, much less trans liberation, and have never fought for either. They use our struggle to exist as an advertisement for whatever election is going on at the time.
They 'support' trans people in superficial ways and then turn on them the moment they see it as expedient.
I noticed something similar. Mamdani's success in New York was largely attributed to him focusing on economic issues, not cultural ones. I'm not american, so I cannot speak to that, but anecdotally, in my circles alot of people started to adopt that kind of rhetoric pretty openly: Social Justice needs to wait until we get Economic Justice. I feel the key failure is to see both as seperate entities. I agree that focusing economic issues is a winning strategy, but it is not either or. Social Justice is Economic Justice. Alot of my Queer Comerades have been very vocal about this from the start, and now they are told to hold back, because it is no longer opportune to support them vocally. It breaks my heart honestly
it is no longer opportune to support them vocally.
This is a really good example of the spotty support from Liberals in America. The main contradiction will always be economic but minorities are scapegoated to prevent workers uprising. This creates a contradiction by pointing out the scapegoat, supporting the group, and directly addressing the economic contradictions.
It really isn't that hard to support minorities and fight for economic revolution.
Someone mentioned that "Democrats should be the default option for queers" and while I thought I had examples I'm struggling to actually find more than a couple. It might be that there just is support and its not as acute of a contradiction as I suspected.
“Woke 1.0 was craaazzzyy” crowd.
Literally abandoned BLM after January 1 and Metoo after Biden got called out.
Focusing either is a winning strategy. The truth is that Republicans truly suck and people can see that. The problem is that Democrats don't want to have a programme of economic or social justice because they are completely a bourgeois party who exist to ratchet any leftward change.
Establishment Democrats especially look exactly like Republicans right now because of the cropping up of Mamdani-like figures which is forcing the old guard to signal hard their "do nothing but support israel" line so that the identity of the party is not distorted.
They only ever support trans people with empty words, so when they turn on them it's more subtle. Look at Talarico's "men shouldn't be in women's sports" for a recent example.
They are definitely one of the groups of people most easily cast aside for being “too noisy” and “too political” which makes it “difficult to build coalitions”.
A good chunk of libs are also the on the Radfem spectrum.
I realize that by saying "radfem" you're referring to TERFs but I, as a trans radfem, feel the need to clarify:
- TERFs aren't feminists, never mind radical feminists, so calling them either is inaccurate.
- Radical Feminism was at its conception trans-inclusive and remains so; TERFism is a fringe ideology and has never dominated radfem spaces at any point in time, anywhere, ever, period despite TERF belief to the contrary.
- Liberals are Liberal Feminists at best, and the problem with Liberal Feminism is that it operates on the same flawed vibes-based logic as any other Liberal ideology.
Just for a little context, I'm Brazillian and here, TERF doesn't roll off the tongue, so we usually call them Radfems or Rads.
But we usually mean that, Rads = TERFs, even if it's a misnomer.
I get it. Technically even in English TERF doesn't work because there are actual radical feminists that are trans-exclusive but they're such a fringe minority that barely anyone knows they exist, while the people who get the TERF label are basically synonymous with the "Gender Critical" folks who don't have a shred of feminism in their ideology at all.
Both vile and transphobic but one is more like a strand of revisionism within radical feminism rather than something entirely different.
