I didn't know cockroaches were mammals. Everyday is a new lesson on Lemmy.

Close, you actually blend them up and strain out the liquid.

From what I remember, the original study was indeed about cockroach "milk", from a species that births live babies and feeds them a slurry of crystals and proteins. That slurry is the stuff that is technically more "nutritious"

I don't think anyone is actually trying to get humans to consume the stuff. There are a lot of mammals that produce milk that is more nutrient dense than cow milk, it's just not as easy to collect it + theres little reason to do so

Does this mean we're going to start breeding cockroaches for breast size?

They have to kill the mothers. It's nowhere near a practical food. One estimate suggested you'd need around a thousand roaches to get about 100 grams of crystals. The more realistic idea scientists floated was sequencing the genes behind the protein and producing it with yeast. 😬

Okay so... One species of cockroach DOES produce "milk" but its the Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata)

They secrete the "milk" into the brood sack (uterus-like pouch housing embryos).

The scientists that tested it can have it all for themselves, I'll even give them a free pass to lord it over us cow milk drinking peons.
