I just hope the Fediverse never becomes unusable without age verification.
To me the death rattles of reddit are the fact that all the comments are low effort dog shit. After collapsing the top few actually good comments, there is next to nothing underneath them. Lemmy has just as many comments as reddit does these days.
I had the displeasure of browsing it without an ad blocker. Half the side is taken up by an ugly reddit sign up ad. Scrolling down you can only see 1 post at a time and its like post - ad - post - ad. Horrible so horrible and their player is dogshit and the comments and posts were very low quality and spammy.
the death rattle is that they are tyring to force logins, because thier favorite AI isnt scraping them anymore.

What's the point of a forum like this without any people contributing to it?
Not having to wade through spam and hate.
More diversity would help with the amount of hate already bubbling up here.
More women and more people of color would help balance some of the male-dominated takes that are often supported and uplifted here. There's a lot of sexism and racism that is tolerated or at least appears tolerated because there's no visible pushback.
More diversity leads to humanizing others and reducing hate being directed at certain groups.
Yeah, that's why I joined a queer instance
It would be cool to have some queer representation spread out as well. I don't like the idea of allowing the jerks to be the predominant voice in such a space like this when there's a lot of other people I'd love to hear from instead.
I don't have the spoons to teach others not to be assholes anymore. I use social spaces in small doses and bursts.
Very understandable! I hope your corners of the internet continue to be supportive and fun :)
Same to you! I really like being able to find and build a community on here. My favorite reddit was wholesome memes before leaving reddit.
i had a wierd ban from blahaj the other week, dint realize they were this annoying as the startrek website dude. i think alot of the lgbtq+ went back to reddit, once the large instance shut down last year.
i think most of them are on reddit, and they usually are niche enough they dont get too much attention, i think its a good thing though, because too much attention will just draw into many homophobes.
You don't like the skin colour distribution on Lemmy?
Eh, I think this place is populated primarily by cis white men and that can have an effect on what type of comments and posts are tolerated.
Could be. I haven't seen any demographic data. There does seem to be a lot of LGBTQ+ people, but that could just be the forums I'm using.
Well, I didn't mention anything about sexual orientation in my comment, but yeah there does seem to be more LGBTQ+ people than the average here. I still think it's mostly cis white men.
Nothing about orientation, but you did say cis white men, and the T in LGBTQ+ is "trans". I think you're probably right, but I don't have anything empirical to back it up.
i do notice that too, im poc asian just even explaining on how asia perception of western people(especially white people) seems different from how asia is percieved.
Eh, I think this place is populated primarily by cis white men
Maybe that's because of your own prejudices.
No, I really think that’s the majority demographic here. Like statistically, not emotionally.
There's a lot of sexism and racism that is tolerated or at least appears tolerated because there's no visible pushback.
Could you define sexism/racism? It's gotten to the point where those words are like "woke" and can mean anything to anyone.
It is marginally harder to be a butt when you know you are going to get called on it
That said, it is pretty much an echo chamber in here
Depends, smaller focused groups can kick out bigots better than massive spaces from my experience.
smaller niche communities, subs can do that. but when that smaller focused group becomes large they start kicking out people even for the slightest infraction.
A lot of the smaller groups kick out people who just disagree with them
And not just for being racists or bigots
For example, I don’t personally believe that the kind of people who can afford to commute by bike need a safe space to be protected from someone pointing out that their expressed glee at auto accidents is callously political.
If you do your comments will be deleted.
They have some things to teach Musk about being snowflakes.
(Really, in modern US cities, only rich white dudes commute by bike. No single mom is biking her kids to daycare on her way to her shift at the chemical plant. Those roads don’t get bike lanes anyway.)
Edit: and the mod deleted my post for bigotry lol
i always found the bike community forums/subs always have wierd obsession in trying to turn everywhere they think they can ride into a bike only zone. people sitll need to commute by car or public transit, it just hurts those people. and there bike communities in irl that are douchey.
Send them a picture of your dick and say that if you are a child then they are now in possession of child porn
Unfortunately it seems we're moving towards a future where every online service will eventually require realtime realID authentication.
Yeah, I noticed just a few hours ago that even with reddit enhancement suite (RES) on https://www.reddit.com/domain/v.redd.it/ I was getting the shitty reddit player where you can't resize it, and that finally made me snap and remove RES + a handful of userscripts associated with reddit.
So it's possible they just pushed some update earlier today.
People dont care. It's just part if the internet these days.
Reddit is just doing what everyone else soon will
