Sites with closed captions are a challenge to find; I've managed for a bit, and I found great ones.

However, now I'm trying to watch a show called Tokyo Vice where open subtitles aren't working, and I have to find Nova ones.

However, sites that have them don't work 99% of the time for this show; I've tried hundreds.

The frustration of not being able to watch a show and chill before bed is huge; this show I quoted isn't even available in my country.

So yeah... This was my rant.

Stop using shitty sites, start torrenting. Almost all decent torrent releases have subtitles and/or CCs.

So this might get some flag but I have hat some luck running a 100% local AI model to do this. Generating subtitles for movies or shows where I could not find any at all or know someone willing enough to translate the whole thing.

This is literally one of the best use cases for LLM. I mean hell deepL exist and people aren't angry at it. Tho it's not really a general LLM.

But yeah, anyone being upset someone is using a language model for one of the few legitimately useful and good things it provides us. Is just being a hater for the sake of being a hater.

You wanna tell the rest of the class which model? Because I have had recommendations but they were more theoretical than actually vouched by someone running their local model. Whisper is supposed to be good for English and the free AI online will recommend it, but as soon as you scratch a bit you'll learn about better models for other languages (Chinese, in my case).

The landscape changes frequently even sometimes two of three times a week.

I use whisper and various whisper variants generally. But I've recently tried hy-mt2 and found it to be really good as well.

Hy-mt2 is a tencent model so it may do Chinese really well. My personal use case is translating Bollywood and Chinese movies to English.

Have you tried the FastStream web browser extension? Among its features is subtitle search for a stream you're watching.

    https://github.com/Andrews54757/FastStream

I've even used it on legit sites that already had subtitles, to find some with a better translation.

Stremio has it from all the typical release groups with an array of subtitle options, so it should be readily available as a torrent as well.

I only watch an episode every 1-2 days, and I don't consider a paid VPN worth for torrent this little, neither I wanna torrent without one in this age.

After like 3-4 nights I spent trying different sites rather than watching, I'm considering just going without closed captions even if I don't understand everything.

Totally sucks if you ask me, it's getting a challenge to be a pirate lately

Is learning a language and enjoyment of your show not worth $1-2 a month? How are these dodgy sites safer to rawdog than Usenet or torrents?

Some players can shift timing of the subtitles. Then you can just adjust timing of any subtitles with correct framerate. You can even adjust the framerate. Once you learn how to do it, it's fast and simple.
