Because they're trying to find those idiots that mess up the codebase by using ai, right?

Right?

I had been planning to move to proton. Definitely won’t be now.

    Fastmail? Mailbox.org?

I moved off of Proton to Mailbox.org maybe 6 months or so ago. No complaints. Much happier tbh.

Seconded. Still need to move the last bit of my mail to Mailbox.org. I'd also recommend Fastmail, Tutanota, Disroot, and Mailfence.

IVPN is the only one I've found similar to Mullvad.

What's the community consensus on it, though? IIRC, not so good?

TBF, I'm familiar with these IVPN events, but I'm open to learning new & updated facts, fo sho!

Webpages do not load and/or DNS leaks when connecting via NetworkManager

    2023 vulnerability

Not to mention that Swiss laws on the matter are unlikely to change anytime soon, (ie. ironclad, in their constitution) whereas Gibraltar is a UK territory and isn't as reliable long-term in that regard —though they've successfully defended against suits before. So, yeah, for now. 🤷🏼‍♂️

First mullvad and now proton. Sheeeesh.

So now this is an alternative email thread, right?

    Astermail? Fastmail?

Are both also shoving ai down their employees throats and/or guving money to fascists?

Is my only hope hosting and maintaining my own email service?

We’ve known about Proton for way longer then Mullvad. CEO has had TDS for a while now; the AI pivot is like the last 5 degrees of the heelturn. Same with Omarchy and Brave.

One of the owners is a liberta anarch isolationist who donate to a right-wing anti-immigrant political party, pretty much single-handedly keeping it going, iirc. The company distanced themselves but did not apologize or say ‘fuck one of our owners’ so people are not sure what to make of it.
Don’t know what it has to do with AI though.

“Sign up for free access to this post”.

I'm aware that a link is attached which bypasses this restriction, but if I have to break the law to read the article or alternatively hand over my personal data, then I think it shouldn't have been shared here in the first place.

Archive.is and its variations sadly also exploited their users to DDoS another website and falsified data; they also refused to comply with data protection regulation in the past, and remove personal data from their websites. Wikipedia banned the service entirely and removed all references.

  • Lotta discussion about alternatives.

For email I recommend runbox.com. They just do email, that's it. worker owned, geothermal powered, based in Norway which has better privacy laws than EU and no ChatControl.

For all else, find a NextCloud provider -- there are tons. Even a couple of free ones.

Can recommend mailfence.com for email, calendar, addressbook.

Reasonably priced, publish yearly transparency reports, support email encryption, don't do bullshit add-ons, have shown to be stable about their principles throughout the years I've been their customer.

    So, who's the alternative?

From what I hear Tuta is only barely reputable? Something about false cryptography. Services like mailbox and posteo don't have a free tier. The offerings overall seem to be so bad that gmail is beginning to look somewhat desirable by this point.

Not that it impacts much in the short term. Until a long-term viable alternative shows up, the best I can do is to continue using Proton's free tier so that I am at least somewhat a cents / nickels cost to them rather than a profit.

I'm so convinced there's a smear campaign against Proton. It makes it very hard to tell what's real.

EDIT Looking at other sources, including their official response on reddit, yes it seems like they've sold out.
