I don't know what I'm supposed to be hearing for the a team van. The theme music? Engine noises? The gravel road?
I heard the “bullet” noises when the logo letters hit the screen between the opening monologue and the first bars of the theme song. And then I saw that jeep doing the barrel roll from the opening. I hadn’t realized how much of that was burned into my brain.
The theme for the A-Team.
The others are: Air Wolf and Knight Rider.
ITT: social security recipients
For anyone else confused like I was, these were iconic vehicles from some old and terminally 80s television shows ("A-team", "Knight Rider", "Air wolf"). Seriously, the theme songs alone are just... wow.
IMO the title cards would have worked better. This makes it seem like you're supposed to hear the sound that the vehicles made
Also, was Air Wolf that popular? I would have swapped it with MacGyver, and I'm judging that based on how often other pop culture seems to reference the shows above (ex. Community, etc).
MacGyver is popular enough that some people use it to describe when something is juryrigged/improvised. They might even understand it better than those alternate definitions
I can hear Airwolf's screaming turbine and K.I.T.T.s sensor array.
And they were all very popular. They left the one unpopular vehicle out: Street Hawk.
I watched these shows as a kid in late 90s via Austrian public TV and can confirm: Air Wolf wasn't among them but MacGyver was though.
I think Baywatch would've worked as well though the genre might be a bit off compared to the others.
Having just watched an episode of the A-team, I think it's that when these iconic vehicles are onscreen and 'doing things' they play the score. (I'm just assuming that's true for the other two as well, it was true in other 80s shows I've seen and seems to have been something of a trope)
It doesn't even have to be a picture:
I thought Airwolf was a fever dream I had as a child? It was real‽
It's really wild that the main characters had the weird habit of ending up in aerial combat every week as civilians.
Not once in my 43 years have I felt the need to ascend in my battle helicopter to save the day.
Helicopters were so cool in the 80s.
Fucking christ I'm glad I don't live in the 80s...
They call it in, and Murphy decides to show Lymangood something interesting. They fly over to nearby Encino, which is outside their patrol area. At 9:30PM, Lymangood is able to observe a very flexible young woman doing some amazing yoga moves in the nude. Unfortunately, they are interrupted. That "abandoned car" they spotted earlier was not abandoned.
Dude, that would 100% happen when you give cops surveillance tools. Not showing that in movies is actually less realistic.
80s movies were so much more sexploitative. But this scene is just accurate.
I wonder how much of that behavior is because it was viewed as acceptable behavior through things like its portrayal in this movie? "Media shapes culture shapes media" is an argument, but "it's realistic" falls a bit flat as a reason to perpetuate normalizing the behavior since clearly society has shifted away from that kind of representation of casual sexual harassment as being acceptable.
It's about how you show it. If it's clear from the film that the behavior is not OK, I think it's fine to show things that are absolutely happening in the real world. We get films and shows where cops murder people, steal drugs, whatever. And that's certainly not normalizing this behavior. Not showing it is, in my mind, sweeping the well-documented asocial, asshole behavior of many cops under the carpet. Copaganda, essentially.
