Uber can now tell when you're drunk, and don't have a car and will charge you more because you're desperate.

What? Uber had algorithms to determine whether the person is drunk or not and surge the price for them back when I was working for them in 2019

My husband and I used Uber for one of the first times to get back home after a long walk, where we were both inebriated. It was pretty clear and we weren't trying to hide it, but we weren't rude, and I was careful not to slam the door or anything. The driver gave us a 1-star rating and it took a long time before I found a few drivers willing to chance it on me in the meantime. I don't remember that driver but I hope I've cut them off in traffic since. You know what, I probably have.

I drove back in 2017-2018, and at that time Uber was starting to get difficult about reimbursing cleaning fees when some drunk puked in the car, which made fewer drivers want to pick up drunks. I can't imagine the situation has improved since then.

Drivers are currently making like $12-$14/hr, so...yup. Delivery drivers are the number one recipients of government food benefits in the U.S. right now. And Uber will just deny my cleaning fee when someone vomits, soooo...yup. Not accepting that shit in my car and paying out of pocket to clean it after midnight (tons of detailing options open then), having to drag an unconscious stranger out of my car, etc.

They will just charge drunk fee. Uber not the driver.

The point of Uber is to make money. As long as businesses can make money by kicking you in the face, they will do it.

by this point most people in america probably don't remember taxi cabs. they would often be dirty and driven by a disheveled wildman. these drivers answered to no one other than their dispatcher who gave just as little of a fuck.

uber was built in response to this. it was not only based on these occasional bad experiences, but to ensure that every working class person was on their best behavior when in the presence of their betters. it was never about a service or bettering anything, other than sparing the better-off from mild inconvenience.

Uber, lyft, etc also do a lot of hospital-to-home transport for otherwise ambulatory / self care patients. Wondering if theyre gonna stop picking up my Psych patients too.
