OpenStreetMaps (which is what everyone should be using) has a discussion on this - https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/gulf-of-america-gulf-of-mexico/124571/13.

Basically they added a piece saying "the US calls it this", but nobody uses it.

I love and contribute to OSM. I wish there was a good way to integrate traffic into systems without invasion of privacy though. 95% of the time when driving I know where I going already. I just need to know where the wrecks are, because those can add an hour or more to my commute.

Waze, which is beyond evil, originally sold itself as that community kind of idea . . . "you tell me about wrecks, I'll tell you, and we'll all be better".

Maybe some sort of app, based on OSM, that sends hashed information about wrecks and doesn't hold logs, could be a good thing?

Can you please enlighten me about Waze?

    Per Snopes:

Waze — which was founded in Israel in 2008 and acquired by Google in 2013 —  specifies in its terms of use that Israeli courts and laws govern the app's legal matters. Uri Levine, Ehud Shabtai and Amir Shinar, who reportedly served in the Israeli military, co-founded Waze in 2008.

However, no credible, publicly available evidence confirmed or debunked the claim that Israel's government, military or other Israeli officials secretly use Waze to surveil the app's users. As such, we've rated this claim a mixture of true and undetermined information.

CoMaps is really solid but it needs to mimic the work flow of Google maps. Also, traffic based routing is essential for city driving. I would sacrifice a bit of privacy for the good of the community. I'm sure it could be done anonymously. I'd even be willing to pay for the service.

Yeah, CoMaps has been solid for me with a few exceptions. Tried to reroute me in the city once. It would've made a 15 minute drive take 30 minutes. The side effect of switching to CoMaps has been an increase in my knowledge of areas since I feel like I have to pay more attention. While that's an indictment on CoMaps, I personally like the change.

This article is blatantly lying, it says lake america just like all the other bootlicking morons.

I've seen the most politically apathetic centrists switch to mapquest over this whole thing, Maga really fucked google/apple. Lol

I neither need nor use maps but if I did I'd pick up a foldable one from my local gas station and if those don't exist anymore then it's MapQuest all the way!

I actually live in portugal, and when I checked google maps it was called Lake America so it's not just in America that it says that. Anyway I replaced it with mapquest but tbh MQ isn't super useful in my city. Good thing I know the place well enough already I guess.

What locale is your phone on? en-US? Because on en-UK I get Lake Ontario with America in parentheses on both Google maps and Apple maps. I suspect if you're on en-US you get the official name in use in the US.

Meanwhile, Eric Trump and Don Jr. are still calling it the "Gulf of Mexico"

Yes, that is literally the verbatim stated purpose of that comment....

You're not highlighting anything, you're just repeating the thing that original commentor already said.

OC: "Meanwhile, here's a map showing that Don Jr still uses gulf of mexico"

You: "Hey look, that map lists gulf of mexico"

You're not highlighting anything that wasn't already explicitly highlighted by the OC

“It’s one of the Great Lakes. There are acronyms like HOMES, and this is the ‘O,’” Berger explained, almost exasperated.

I think there's far better reasons for not changing it than preserving an acronym, but perhaps they think being more blunt would deter Trump-supporting customers.

For the impatient, mapquest left Ontario as Ontario.

HereWeGo is pretty good, it still says Lake Ontario.
