‘cause they’ve enshittified.

We went from cable cutting to piracy to streaming services that were relatively inexpensive and ad-free back to services that emulated cable - expensive and full of ads, so guess what’s next?

It's getting harder to even find shit worth pirating so... Going outside?

You can branch out, that should be impossible unless you watch stuff 24/7 and are 40+, use an app like trakt to get shown more stuff you typically don't see. If you use something like stremio, the default view barely shows different content.

I mostly go off recommendations from friends or from reading about stuff online or YouTube shorts and then torrent whatever sounds interesting. The quality of what's getting put out has just gone to shit with a lot of it just being derivative of things that have come before if not just straight remakes or if it is something new the writing is crappy.

I have an infinite backlog, tons of great stuff out there, a lot of great stuff just never got popular enough to be recommended or stopped being talked about once it finished. I recommend stremio + torbox or some other debrid service, you'll see a lot more stuff that isn't popular currently (unlike browsing torrents and yt channels) and it'll all load quickly since it's most likely cached already.

Can't trust reviews, I've seen some 3/10 shows/movies I loved, some 10/10 ones I hated, from critics who I thought had the same taste as me.

why bother when you cancel every show after the second season?

    Fuck Netflix. Capitalist hell machine.

We could have free streaming via public library systems, or something else that's not a profit driven malice, but this is the bad place.

We need to revisit copyright laws. Life of the author plus 70 years just encourages people to make money off work they had nothing to do with. 15 years then free domain.

    15 years then free domain.

That's what I always say. Weirdly, a lot of people who don't have anything copyrighted themselves argue for longer copyright.

I would argue this with "but what about franchises getting slopped up with content that doesn't fit the original narrative/characterizations?" But then I look at what Disney has done with Star wars and marvel and realize I don't really have leg to stand on.

Because they randomly cancel shows for no reason

Hard to get invested when they're all 6 episode seasons, 2+ year breaks, and canceled after 2 or 3 seasons.

Maybe if they make Three Body Problem S2, 4 episodes, instead of 8, it will solve it. Or they could cancel Kaos again, or try running a washed up comedian, Im sure that will increase engagement. Actually, I think I want an Ad for my paid service, every 15 seconds. yeah. do that.

why bother when most series get cancelled only after 1-3 season anyway, and its only 8episodes plus extremely long hiatus times between seasons.

Don't forget the massive cliffhangers every time. It would be fine if a show would run for 2 Seasons if at the end its all neatly packed up. But no.

The OA finishes with them warping to our world and then just stops and this kind of shit.

Fuck Netflix and its practice of cancelling shows at their second season. May it crash and burn when the AI market turns.

I finally canceled my Netflix in favor of going full Plex. They upped their subscription price for the last time and I was sick of it.

We've cancelled our Netflix subscription almost a year aggo and back then it was already getting faaaaar too boring.

Good shows that only get one or two seasons: Oh great, thanks a lot assholes. Now I'm invested in these characters without any closure. <= it was like that all the time. Fuck that, I'm not paying for demos. Or big corpos that suck up to fascism.

  • source
  • Netflix and D+ inspired me to finally get my arr stack going and now for less than the cost of 1 Netflix subscription I am able to stream anything I want from my remote box. So thanks for that, I wouldn't be here flying my 🏴‍☠️ without their service getting so shitty and expensive that I went well out of my way to set this up and now I love it.

But are users who are doing this unsubscribing? Because if they don't, maybe that's what Netflix is aiming for. I don't pretend to understand the way of con artists executives.

It's not hard to get people to watch. Produce good shows with actual seasons (minimum 13 episodes, preferably somewhere around 20 for certain types of shows). Then let those shows run for multiple seasons to continue to build up a fan base, so you can start to make money on merchandising. Make sure to always film a proper ending and avoid cliff hangers for the series finale to increase rewatchability. In fifteen years, you can have multiple shows that have at least 5+ seasons/100+ episodes, greatly increasing variety and rewatchability.

I haven't used Netflix in ages, but their UI was horrible. Considering trends for the past twenty years, I can't imagine it got better. I'll never forgive them for deleting the reviews. Often, the Netflix reviews were the best reviews (that was not universally true).

But inevitably, they will increase prices, add more ads, then start spamming those 5+ seasons/100+ episodes shows made fully from AI slop.

Its just a question of time and economics that streaming will become just as awful and enshitified as cable once was.

By definition and stock valuation, this has to happen for the money invested in these companies to make sense.
