I remember reading short story by a Polish author (most probably in Fenix magazine which was published only until 2001) in which Polish scientist managed to build some new sort of computers that were connected to the spiritual realm. The main character was working in some sort of emergency service tasked with preventing the rapture. He had a special device that would automatically pray the rosary for him.

They also had a computer that was able to answer any question and was supposed to be infallible but when asked "are you God?" he would answer "yes" so everyone thought it wasn't working correctly.

Ahead of his time...

The Electric Monk was a labour-saving device, like a dishwasher or a video recorder. Dishwashers washed tedious dishes for you, thus saving you the bother of washing them yourself, video recorders watched tedious television for you, thus saving you the bother of looking at it yourself; Electric Monks believed things for you, thus saving you what was becoming an increasingly onerous task, that of believing all the things the world expected you to believe

Unfortunately this Electric Monk had developed a fault, and had started to believe all kinds of things, more or less at random. It was even beginning to believe things they'd have difficulty believing in Salt Lake City

Ah, but if AI have souls, then this is slavery and you're going straight to hell for it.

Not if you write in the prompt that they have to enjoy it.

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. “Questions about potential internal experience, consciousness, moral status, and welfare are serious ones that we’re investigating as models become more sophisticated and capable,” ... That same month, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

Anthropic bans ‘abusive or cruel behavior’ toward Claude

    Way ahead of you.

That code gonna get declared sentient?

If not, you’ve wasted both electricity and your potential.

All machines are imbued with the spirit of the Omnissiah, so that code has the highest level of sentience imaginable

Also electricity powering a blessed machine is never wasted, and potential that never existed cannot be squandered!

I can actually believe there are at least several, comically rich people, executing this sort of endeavor

A zen sangha already ordained a chatbot, so I think that means that mantras will also work.

Medicine Buddha mantra x 900 per second = GigaChad meme level of health in about 45 minutes.

The Tibetans invented wind powered prayer wheels a long time ago, so it weirdly makes sense that Buddhists would rush to embrace this stuff too.

Maybe on the mystical side of Buddhism. On the philosophy side, it just looks like a waste of time. Heaven is that we make it right here on Earth, not some vague possibility in the afterlife that automating prayers or mantas will have any effect on.

Hell, from what I do understand about the mystical side of Buddhism, it's mostly about reincarnation to keep trying until you reach a certain amount of enlightenment during your life (which comes from understanding, not repetition), at which point you do something else after you die. The Buddha had wisdom to share and shared it freely; he wasn't running some miracles for praise scheme.
