Depicting Thanos as a role model is part of liking Marvel movies?

Outside of memes I genuinely don't know anything about Thanos. Is he good or bad? What does him being on a poster mean

In a recent Marvel movie arc, he tries to "save" the universe from suffering and conflict and insufficient space/resources by indiscriminately deleting half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers using a super powerful artifact.

Never understood if you could snap half the life away, why not just double the resources or improve the efficiency of existing resource utilization? What a stupid, small brained solution to reach for when you're tapping omnipotence. Especially because it doesn't solve the problem because life fucks and makes more life! Fuck I hate what comic book movies became.

Because he doesn't actually care about any of that, he just wants to prove that his original plan would have worked.

So when Thanos was younger, his planet was faced with overpopulation. He proposed that half the population should be killed at random, so that the other half could have all the resources. Of course, he was called crazy, but the planet ended up dying of overpopulation anyway, which convinced Thanos that he was right all along.

So his whole reason for comitting mass genocide is all so he can point and say, "See, I was right!"

Thanos is called "The Mad Titan" after all.

Or simply make all life half the size.

Could you imagine Earth if everything alive were like, 10% of its size? There would be so much space, so much room for resources to flourish.

So much distance between one country on one side of the planet and a country on the other side that wars between the two would be completely unfeasible.

I'm sure I'll be easily shown to be wrong, but I assumed that it's because the universe's mass is finite and that the all-powerful infinity stones only freely manipulate the substance of the universe, and therefore work with limited material. In that case, doubling resources in one place means repurposing equivalent mass from other areas.

The other problem is how you implement this solution across the universe: do you re-engineering biological systems to be twice as efficient? Do you double the input energy? What about non-biological resources: do you speed up geologic processes? Do you simply increase the size and mass of each world and assume twice the resources are available and accessible? How deep of an understanding of each ecosystem is needed to account for all potential target populations, and can a single mind hold all that information in place while giving the infinity stones such a command?

Most pertinently, Thanos was a cynic. He didn't trust any higher lifeform to not ultimately be shortsighted and selfish, and so his brute force solution was a culling.

imo after a certain age, you should have better role models than thanos and joker

    and better taste in decor

Not my cup of tea, but damn that just seems really judgemental.

Sometimes being judgemental is okay. Calling someone out for idolizing mentally unstable murderers is justified.

Feel like if it was mussolini or Trump this would be the message. It's a cartoon character. Anyway, this thread is starting to feel silly. Thought I was missing the joke, I guess it just isn't resonating.

While the Thanos bit might be artistic hyperbole, picking the Joker as a role model is more common irl than it should be, and is a legitimate red flag, considering that Joker stans tend to romanticize his relationship with Harley Quinn, which is very much an abusive, manipulative one.

When looking for a mature, emotional healthy & safe partner, Joker fans should be avoided at a costs.

I think it's bucking the trend of idolizing villains. Not to mention the sheer size of the posters, making them far too much of their identity. Also buying a gold KAWS figure for some ungodly price was a choice...

  • People are attracted to these characters because they are well written tortured souls not petty misanthropes. Joker suffers from untreated mental illness and an unrequited quest for acceptance that is relatable but something that most simply internalize and suffer with. Like Thanos there is an element of relatable humanity there but with which he reacts in the most horrible of ways.
Thanos seems almost doomed to exist. Someone or something keyed the universe to have an option to partially destruct. That this is possible via a specific programmed sequence of events implies that it was meant to happen at some point. Thanos feels the time is now - that survival requires this destruction and that he is called to enact it. Its intentionally unclear whether he is acting through evil or that his innate power calls upon him to bear a cross of necessity that serves a greater good through a horrible act.

Also it's just fun because they are make-believe, they aren't hurting anyone or actively encouraging anyone to do harm. It's like being repulsed by someone playing violent videogames - such a superficial empty judgment to pass.

Does it though? What indicates gamer? I think it's more about edginess and cringiness than marvel/gamer.

What is wrong about gaming and marvel? I don't really know much about marvel, gaming is surely such a wide thing how can that be a problem at all?

I married a man who likes Dragon Ball Z enough to have several of the mangas, so don't get me wrong here. Some of this stuff doesn't necessarily bother me personally, but there's a certain reputation that fans of the Joker get and picking Thanos of all the Marvel characters is a choice.

Gaming is hit or miss - if someone is into gaming so much that all of their decorations are gaming related, it begs the question if they are willing to make enough time in their life for you around their hobby. And I say this as a gamer myself. It's known to be a hobby that people dedicate a lot of time toward.
