If you don't know, Mt Olive Pickles come from a pretty red area of North Carolina.

Good on them.

I honestly think their pickles kind of suck, at least the dills aren't super great, but I will consider trying some other varieties, good job Mt Olive

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I grew up eating their sweet relish in deviled eggs, I’m not going to say it’s irreplaceable but it’s definitely tasty.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 11 points 5 days ago

I don't use much with relish these days but I'll give it a whirl if in the need, thanks :)

[–] plateee@piefed.social 17 points 5 days ago (2 children)

They have a Sweet N Hot mix that works great in brat pockets.

  • Get some tin foil.
  • Put a pack of brats (the kind that are already cooked/need to be warmed up - like Johnsonville or whatever) on the middle of the foil (leave enough room to fold up into a packet)
  • Chop up some sweet n hot peppers, and an equal amount of white onion - put that on top.
  • seal up the packet, bake at 350°F until heated through

I do love a recipe with easy cleanup :) sounds yummo, I'll try it over summer for sure

I think they have a place for certain things. Also the mt.olive simply pickles kosher dills with the red banner is way better than their regular kosher dills.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Ah gotcha, I'll give them a go, I just didn't care for the dill spears or hamburger slices, no one makes a decent hamburger dill now they are all giant slabs of cucumber or bad lol

They're decent. They're fine. Not great.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I like their mini dill pickles. Great for a snack, great sliced on a sandwich. The mini ones have better texture than the normal sized, more crunch.

I usually use their roasted red peppers for shakshuka. They work pretty well for that.

[–] farting_gorilla@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Sounds like those would be good for muhammara too!

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sounds tasty, I never made that myself I'll have to try! thank you :)

[–] ImADifferentBird@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Definitely do. I mostly follow Alton Brown's recipe, but I use a jar of the Mt. Olive roasted red peppers instead of roasting my own as a time saver. I'll also usually do a 28 ounce can of crushed San Marzano tomatoes in puree instead of the beefsteak tomatoes. Both of these are because I usually make this as a weekend breakfast, and I can't be bothered to make those fresh first thing in the morning.

Also, Alton's recipe uses urfa biber pepper, but Aleppo pepper is more traditional. IIRC, Aleppo pepper was hard to come by when he published it during the Syrian civil war, but it's much more plentiful now.

The quick preserved lemons and the harissa can be made well in advance, and are also delicious in many other dishes. If you don't want to be bothered with the latter, Trader Joe's sells prepared harissa in a jar.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago

Oh, interesting, I have aleppo pepper but never heard of urfa biber. I love aleppo it has almost a citrus tang to it. I've had the Trader Joe's harissa it's good yea, they used to make an aleppo sauce actually but they stopped making it like 3 years ago, too bad it was so tasty on falafel :9 I'll check Alton's recipe and try your tasty alterations :)

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Lol their dills are good imo

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

better or worse than Bick's?

Bick's are like the default pickle up here in Ontario, and they're American so obvs a lot of us aren't buying them anymore. they still have a lot of shelf space, but I've started to see a lot of other brands get more. not more US brands though so I doubt I'll ever see these

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I've never had or heard of Bick's actually so I couldn't say. Looks like it was a Canadian brand that was bought by an American company so maybe we don't have it, we probably have the same product under a different name somewhere tho, like 4 companies make everything now

[–] ImADifferentBird@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Looked them up. Apparently they used to be owned by Smuckers, who kept the production in Canada, but they got sold to a company called Treehouse Foods, who moved it to Wisconsin. Treehouse apparently mostly makes store brand products.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I've almost certainly had them then as I live in Wisconsin and have bought store brand pickles before, thank you for the info :) I guess I would say better than Bick's then, because I think they recycle old pickle juice for the store pickles or something, at least the ones I've tried haha

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

I will say that I've never found Bick's to be terrible. a bit bland. but they do have several different flavours.

but yeah there's Canadian stuff I can buy instead

Their chopped jalapeños are very good but I agree that their pickles are mediocre

People who support the confederate flag or make it their identity are sad. The Confederacy lasted 4 years. That’s it. They lost, they didn’t add anything of value to our society. It’s so weird that anyone would look to those 4 years and say “yeah, that’s where my allegiance is”. 95% of them probably don’t even know anything about the confederacy outside of slavery.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's not weird. They and everybody with two connected neurons know the confederate flag really means "I hate black people".

[–] IMALlama@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You're right that's exactly what it means. However, there's a ton of spin going on with BS like the lost cause that try to spin the founding of the Confederacy as something morally just and even heroic. They focus on things like states rights, chivalry, rebellion (the rebel flag), etc. Of course those obviously come at the expense of truly local rights and the rights of women. If you read any of the speeches of the time or the actual articles of succession it will become very obvious that it was about slavery.

It doesn't help that pop culture leaned into presenting Confederate symbolism as "they're trying to morally rebel against the corrupt government" for a bit. That's a big reason why the Dukes of Hazard car, the General Lee, had a Confederate flag on the roof.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Imagine having the Declaration of Independence at hand and instead going "naw, lets use the confederate flag to show how much I like losing rebellions by repping the side that wants to keep human trafficking legal."

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 55 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Could we just one time have some event in DC with MAGA people where a Confederate loser flag doesn't show up?

[–] finalarbiter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 42 points 5 days ago

The venn diagram between the two groups is a circle, so probably not

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Can't we just get rid of the MAGA people instead?

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm sure they could be useful doing manual labor.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

Nah, just deport them. Preferably somewhere off-planet.

It really amazes me that the guys who say party of Lincoln are also flying the flag of the country that fought Lincoln.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Not only that, the flag that LOST to Lincoln. It's some bizzare history cuck dom-sub thing. I don't get it.

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

That’s because they took the party to shit over it with their racism. Of course, the idiots haven’t caught on that Lincoln was a progressive, which are Democrats, but then, they wouldn’t be idiots.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Maybe have a booth with a Confederate flag on one end and a Union flag in the other with a torch sitting in between. Have a sign saying "BURN ONE. SALUTE THE OTHER." I'd love to see what they'd do.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

A sign? You expect them to read?

[–] ToiletFlushShowerScream@piefed.world 23 points 5 days ago (8 children)

So what Mt Olive products do you recommend I try?

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Their banana peppers. I didn't know that they had this stance but I will buy more of their banana peppers because of it.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 8 points 5 days ago

I love banana peppers so much.

I've been buying Mt. Olive pickles recently because they're cheaper. It's nice to see a company try to have some kind of backbone.

“Our company stands on values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom,” the company said.

I will never understand the love of bread and butter pickles. They're candy sweet, but pickles. A great pickle is a tart and salty and complement to a savory meal

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I'm not a complicated man, I put the sliced dill pickles on my deli meat sandwiches.

Although, I've also started eating a new sandwich of my own devising... Black forest ham, 2 fried eggs (I keep it all together, like an omelet), pickled jalapenos, all on a buttered everything bagel.

I'm not sure it's healthy, but it's tasty.

Great recipe trying it soon!

[–] PumaStoleMyBluff@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Pepperoncini. On a salad with a creamy dressing. On a hot beef sandwich. Chopped on hot dogs and brats. A lot of people like them on pizza but I'm personally not a fan.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Just the basic zesty dills are pretty good. Not the best I've had, but they are the only ones out here with the super massive jar of whole pickles for like $8.

Wait massive 8 dollar pickle jar? Warn the grocers, there is not time to put on pants I must have one

Gov. Josh Stein condemned the display, saying, “This flag does not represent the North Carolina we love.

👖🔥

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 21 points 5 days ago

That is so funny.

The corporate democrats have stopped pretending they are liberal.
And the Republicans have stopped pretending they aren't racist, and in favor of bringing back slavery.

Now if AIPAC will just admit they are part of the Mossad, the set will be complete.

[–] MIDItheKID@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I mean good on them. But... B&G Pickles for lyfe.
