They’re already out trying to spin his win as a failure because he didn’t win by a big enough margin.

This guy is literally facing the camera saying “I’m not a socialist. I am a capitalist, who wants the rich to pay their fair share.” and the establishment is screeching communism.

Idk how it can’t be more plainly clear that we are in a class struggle against the ultra rich.

[–] joe@lemmy.world 89 points 1 week ago (3 children)

They won't mention the difference in funds between him and his opponent. She spent tens of millions of dollars more than he did, and she still lost.

This is absolutely a win.

[–] jontree255@lemmy.world 52 points 1 week ago

Yeah this is super important and it scares them because it means their money doesn’t matter.

[–] ToiletFlushShowerScream@piefed.world 46 points 1 week ago (2 children)

AP reported Israel (AIPAC) spent 30 million to defeat him.

[–] joe@lemmy.world 36 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I have seen all sorts of figures about this but I didn't have any on hand.

Judging by https://votelog.org/investigations/michigan-senate-primary-money

  • Benefiting Haley Stevens: $63,297,069 (79.0%)
  • Benefiting Abdul El-Sayed: $16,836,368 (21.0%)

Blursed paredo distribution

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

I'm going to have a celebration drink tonight I think

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 14 points 1 week ago

That was just from AIPAC. They were only half the funding for his opponent.

and the establishment is screeching communism.

They always do that...

The difference, and why they're louder than usual, is because they no longer control the DNC.

The person who does, supports El-Sayed.

Abdul El-Sayed is a dedicated public servant who fought to make government work for Michigan families. Now, he is ready to take that fight to the U.S. Senate.

Congratulations, Abdul! Let’s win this.

So stop calling them "the establishment", because they no longer control the DNC

Call them neoliberals and stop letting them make up a new label every six months

The better question is why anyone would think that socialism would be considered a dirty word in the Rust Belt? If anything, they're helping him. Traditionally blue Michigan voted red in 2024 and it wasn't because Kamala Harris was too socialist.

Hey, for any progressive / socialist / communist / anarchist lemmings out there that thinks the Democratic establishment can't or won't support a more left candidate:

  • “I am proud to offer my support as he takes on Mike Rogers in the general election,” [U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens] said.

  • Curtis Hertel, the chair of Michigan Democratic Party, urged unity ahead of November.

  • Sen. Gary Peters, the Michigan Democrat whose retirement spurred the contentious primary to replace him, said, “Congratulations to him.”

Of course, this doesn't mean we can just vote our way out of this, or that the Democratic party is the best way to move forward your politics. But, just remember the value of a strategic vote isn't nothing and doesn't have much opportunity cost.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Don't forget the DNC chair:

Abdul El-Sayed is a dedicated public servant who fought to make government work for Michigan families. Now, he is ready to take that fight to the U.S. Senate.

Congratulations, Abdul! Let’s win this.

https://x.com/kenmartin73/status/2085012964562641376

He won't weigh on in a primary, but the DNC should never be doing that.

[–] bss03@infosec.pub 10 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I left X when it was still called Twitter, and do extensive ad-blocking (UBO; Medium mode), so I don't see anything posted there. Thanks for the information.

Please stop using X. It only has ad income due to the "daily active users" numbers still being high. Leave it and if you still need to follow select accounts on it, join a Mastodon instance that doesn't defederate @bird.makeup or one of the other X mirroring services.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

I never use it...

I just googled the two names and grabbed the first link.

I think they use Facebook, Twitter, and Substack. Which all have their own problems, and I'd love for them to use better platforms.

Just wanted to get as close of a source as possible. The oligarch owned media will always put a slant on it in articles, because they want to depress Dem primary turnouts.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So Nitter instances won't contribute to the active user numbers?

[–] bss03@infosec.pub 5 points 1 week ago

I believe an X mirroring service will count as a single "daily active user" for the X numbers, no matter how many actual people are accessing the information downstream of the mirroring service. I don't use that number myself, so I'm not sure how it is calculated.

I can operate without X. But, not everyone can. For example, there are governmental organizations that only publish announcements on X. So, some people are going to need to use a mirroring service (or X itself) until they can get entities outside their direct control to change behavior, which always takes time.

Talk is cheap. The Democrats have shown time and time and time again that they're more than happy to virtue signal or tell citizens what they want to hear when election time rolls around but immediately turn their backs on the people when it comes time to govern.

Maybe save the snarky "I told you so" type comments until you can provide more than hollow quotes from a couple of individuals.

ANOTHER Progressive WON? This is FURTHER proof that the ONLY path to Democratic victory is APPEALING to the MAGA votes!

-Democratic Leadership!

[–] bss03@infosec.pub 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

As a fan of Bernie, I know the Democratic Party has chosen to freeze out it's left wing often in the past. But, all the D officers/candidates/etc quoted in the article support Abdul El-Sayed.

Let's see if they can stomach unity this time, and not preemptively attack them, since they haven't yet failed Mr. El-Sayed. (Feel free to attack them for actually abandoning progressive candidate that could have or did win in the past.)

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If they like winning they will need to unite. Centrists need accept the reasons for their loss. This feels a lot like the Bernie rug pull from 2016. Like they will use the primary wins to grab headlines and momentum then add all the support to the most liberal candidate instead.

A year ago I would say US is cooked and there's no way to turn this shit around but this is actually looking promising. Obviously they still have tons of obstacles ahead of them and most of them are way harder that this but they did more than I expected already. Keep fighting!

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (3 children)

It's actually wild to watch how quickly the mood has been shifting since 2024.

Now, everyone is talking about wealth disparity and all the issues that come with it. Progressive candidates are winning primaries left and right. Democrats are flipping seats at an unprecedented rate. Black voter turnout in the South has been surging since the gutting of the VRA.

In November of 2024 the Democratic party was in shambles. Now, thanks to progressive candidates and voters, they're actually forming an identity that isn't just "not Republican." They're running on issues that benefit the common people and they're winning.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Democratic party is still in shambles. There's a faction inside of it that's growing but they still have to win elections (which Trump will try to cancel or steal), win some power inside the party (which the leadership will do everything they can to prevent), win presidential primaries (with, again, entire establishment against them, this time at national level), win elections (against JD or Rubio which could actually be pretty easy) and push through reforms (like filibuster reform, pack Supreme Court and so on) fighting against both republicans and corporate dems. Once all this is done progressives will be able to actually start governing. Very hard but at least there's a path now. A year ago there was nothing.

Even the democrats are disparaging the wave of DSA candidates in their party for being too communist. Of course you should probably check their accounts for AIPAC money. Either way it's still progress to see the apathy fade and push for things that benefit society as a whole instead of billionaires and warmongers

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They're terrified that DSA candidates will win where centrists spent decades losing

I first posted this comment on !michigan!michigan@midwest.social

His win, however slim, represents a significant shift for the Democratic Party; in 2018 he lost the gubernatorial primary to now-Gov. Gretchen Whitmer by 21 percentage points.

This is by no means the only article I’ve seen that mentions this. But what people seem to fail to remember is that at that time there had begun rumblings that if El-Sayed won the Democrat nomination there would be legal challenges to his candidacy. Michigan law requires one to have been a registered Michigan voter for 4 years prior to the election. While El-Sayed had registered to vote when he was 18 in Michigan, and never removed from the voting roles, he had registered and voted in New York like 3 years earlier when he was studying at Columbia.

Even the Republican Secretary of State indicated that she would not interfere with a party’s nominating process and that if such a decision were necessary about any party’s nominee it would only be taken up after their nomination.

After that came to light his poll numbers dropped significantly with Democrats fearing they would end up no one on the ballot. Personally, I doubt it would have gone that way, but people are scared.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

This is troubling

[–] godsammitdam@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

I know it was close, and the constant deluge of ads was hard to overcome.

My question: How do we do better fighting it next time? Even more doorknockers? Community groups that set up fun meet and greet events, etc? How do we better amass the power of the people over the power of money?

[–] maz1@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

By supporting and running candidates who aren't milquetoast poll-readers with passable oratory skills. A decade+ of this shit has finely tuned many folks' bullshit meters and they are very much done with the status quo, or whatever's left of it.

As an example, my US rep sent out a blast email a month or two ago with a one-line Yes/No poll question: "should I support the presidents request for an additional $88B for the Iran War?" Bitch, 1) it's not a "War" as you didn't sign off on it 2) he and his lackeys do not give a single fuck what you do or don't support, they've proven time and again that they're just going to do shit whether or not you as a US rep approve, and 3) why the fuck are you asking me? Your entire job is to know more about this shit than me and make Informed Decisions that reflect the best interests of your constituents; me. In fact, i should be asking you that question then holding you accountable when I disagree. That's how this democracy thing is supposed to work, dickbag.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Volunteer.

All the money in the world can't buy actual enthusiasm.

If you have doubts, I can probably dig up that old video of the Cuomo fundraiser for NYC mayor. You can pay people to pretend to be grassroots support, but they're not going to actually give a shit or be able to actually talk about policy instead of repeating talking points they don't agree with.

Wherever you are, volunteer with your state Dem party, and drag it left. Even if you're lucky enough to be in a "good" state, push em left.

The lower the stakes the more of an advantage that is. With data centers we need people involved at even the local level if we're building up a bottom-up party again, then local politicians are the foundation, not an afterthought.

As two of the greatest environmental protesters of the 90s once said:

You gotta think glooooobally, but act loooooocallly, buuuuuddy

[–] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 5 points 1 week ago

Never understood why the american left doesn't build their own donor sponsored PAC to bribe politicians and spam ads since everyone else is.

The DNC

You know the chair has complete authority and no accountability...

Right?

And that he's supporting El-Sayed just like Mamdani?

Abdul El-Sayed is a dedicated public servant who fought to make government work for Michigan families. Now, he is ready to take that fight to the U.S. Senate.

Congratulations, Abdul! Let’s win this.

https://x.com/kenmartin73/status/2085012964562641376

Like, El-Sayed is literally the type of candidate the DNC chair has gone on record multiple times saying is what the party needs...

Are you just unaware of all this? I can't imagine someone making the comment you did unless they were ignorant of the last 18 months

[–] MrTomS@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Honestly it was a low effort, cheap jab at the DNC when my ire should have been aimed at folks like Jeffries & Schumer. Proud the party and Stevens have come out to support AES

Get ready to Drain AIPAC's Funds Again

[–] zjti8eit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to watching T.V. for the next 3 months. Might have to pay for YouTube premium just to avoid the ads.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Do your part soldier and watch and click on every one of those ads so AIPAC pays. Every bullet you take is one not fired at a confused grandma.

Calling it now! Watch the DNC sabotage the primary election so he tanks. They'd rather lose a democratic election than having a candidate be elected that will actually do what they all claim to stand behind.
