Talk? I use it daily on all my devices
post
You'll have to pry my 3.5 mm jack and physical media from my cold, dead fingers.

I recently bought an MP3 player because I was so sick of Sonos fucking me around, messing with Bluetooth for a few minutes every time I wanted to play a song, losing or breaking my USBC to aux adaptors, no local storage for music, subscriptions, etc.
$100 and this thing has dual DAC chips, can be used as a desktop DAC, has a micro SD card slot, 3.5 AND 4.4mm aux output, and USBC rechargeable. (And Bluetooth but I'm not touching that.) It's genuinely so good that I'm thinking about dumping all "smart" crap and just going full Y2K with my tech.
If you look up "rugged phones" theres quite a large selection of chinese branded phones that have all the bells and whistles you can think of. Ulefone, 8849, Dogee are some of the brands. Ive owned an Ulefone Armor 26 and now an 8849 Tank 5. Both have been great on Tmobile in the US. Headphone jack, waterproof, IR blaster, 120w charging, 17,000mah battery, reverse charging, OLED screens, dual physical sim + esim. My Ulefone had a walkee talkee functionality and a massive speaker. My current Tank 5 has a 1080p projector built in.
Downsides is that you'd probably have some Chinese spyware or something, updates are few and far between and basically never any OS version upgrades so whatever version of android it ships with is what itll always be. Also it uses Mediatek processors instead of Snapdragon. So while good, they're not TOP of the line.
Yeah it's weird, the second you leave flagship phones there's actually tons of options with headphone jacks and expendable storage, but somehow everyone got it in their head that they NEED a flagship android or an iPhone.
I have yet to buy a phone without both expandable storage and a headphone jack. My phone is not old, it's just middle range instead of top of the line.
They aren't going to shove these phones in your face the same way they do flagships, but they're still being made. Do people really need the very minimal upgrades that cameras, storage, ram, and processing power get generation over generation? I don't. I have real cameras that are better and cheaper than an iPhone. I don't do much that requires a strong processor or more ram, those things happen on my computer. I honestly bet there's tons of other people with similar needs that just aren't aware that non flagship phones with different features even exist.
I still use 3.5mm auxiliary cables on a daily basis. Not phased out quite yet.
I refuse to buy a phone without a headphone jack. They already stole our IR blaster, I refuse to let them take more
last year almost checked out a phone without jack at the carrier's store, noticed on time, turned around and got a model with lower specs but had a jack
The Clicks Communicator BB clone looks to have a Jack. It's in the running!!
I feel like the only people who crave the physical keyboard on a phone are the ones that still refuse to use a Swype style keyboard on a touch screen.
When they were first released it was pretty good and now it's basically perfect.
I have not had a physical keyboard since my palm pre died and have not felt the need to go back.
I can live without the headphone jack, no micro SD card is the bigger sin, limiting you to your phones built in storage for no reason other than pure greed is infuriating
This was solely, and I mean completely solely, done out of greed to make more money by massive up charges to the phone model with more storage, and to push users into using their cloud based storage systems that would lock you into their ecosystem and and make a subscription based profit.
I haven't needed the extra storage of the micro SD since what feels like forever. My current phone has 128GB, I'm only using half of it and I have hardly deleted anything from it in something like 2 years.
I also had what appeared be too much storage.
Then I got 2 cats.
Now it says 99% full.
I have broken 4 micro SDs in the last 2 years. Thsnkfully, "broken" means set to read-only mods, so i could recover it. But yeah. I use it a lot.
I only recently learned that when they die they (usually) go read-only and you can very easily dd to a new SD and carry-on.
Would have saved me a lot of headaches over the years.
This shows just shitty SD cards are for storage that's used a lot. Even the expensive ones for high intensity use burn out really fast.
I've been self-hosting my own storage backup with Immich, and it's been a game changer for me. It's been an improvement over swapping out microsd cards and keeping track of what is stored where.
I like both. wireless for the convenience, wired for the quality n latency. Imagine a guitar effects rack n all pedals are connected via bluetooth. Every note would have a 3-5 business day delay. BUT not having the option to choose is a real bummer.
That's kind of an insane comparison. Input delay when using wireless headphones to listen to music is essentially meaningless. At worst it means it takes an additional 1/2 of a second for the song to start.
Input delay when you're actually playing music is of utmost importance because there is a delay on everything you do. It makes it impossible to keep rhythm.
It's two completely different scenarios
Yeah, but people play games on their phones, and video syncing to wireless earphone latency, is extra software that the app has to work around.
And all this, because some industry leaders want to extort you for 50 extra bucks for headphones, instead of putting the 0.70 cents jack on your phone.
The point, is the senselessness of the inconvenience the customer goes through, not how big or small the inconvenience is.
It's proof the designer doesn't have your interest in mind, and will take active steps to make your life worse, big or small, if they can get 10 more bucks out of you that way.
I separated an extra pair of headphones for me and once I wanted to use them I noticed my phone has no headphone jack
I really prefer my wireless anyway. I used to go through a pair of headphobes every month, because the cables got fucked from being tangled in my pocket. Now I've had the same pair of buds for 5 years, with much better sound quality than what I had before
I genuinely don't understand the obsession. I don't miss having a cord on my headphones even a little bit.
