"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

The argument the mod writes is 👌

Update : there’s a new one that appears but, I’ve checked, that’s the same mod as the others

Update 2 : got contacted by the mod, overall sweet guy/gal we agree to disagree and keep the ban up, who said that Lemmy cannot be civil

At least Majel Barret ~~get~~ don’t make mistakes ~~and~~ or hack romulian as the computer

[–] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 102 points 1 week ago (7 children)

Lol, they think the computers in star trek were just LLMs

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 34 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Imagine if the computer on star trek operated the way it does in every episode where the computer is malfunctioning. That's how real-world "AI" works. You ask to go to the bridge and it keeps sending your ass to engineering and ten forward.

Also: They didn't even mention Data who is more AI than even the ship's computer!

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Ironic that Data maintains he's not human but would never gaslight a teenager into suicide

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

After Tesseract and now this, it raises a question. Do people that call themselves conservatives have to always be contrarians?

Literally any topic. There were issues that one would think everyone would agree on and they still surprise you.

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Conservative brains typically have larger amygdalas, which are responsible for anger and fear responses. So yes, their brains reward them when they get angry, so they seek more occasions to get angry.

Communities, not instances. Startrek.website is one instance, lemmy.today is another. An instance hosts communities. Also, no point censoring the names since the modlog is public.

[–] AzuranAurora@piefed.ca 16 points 1 week ago

The censoring is also kinda readable underneath anyway, so it accomplished nothing even if the modlog wasn't public.

[–] e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de 62 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (6 children)

It happens when you post here, you don't even have to interact with their community. Instead they come here, by their own volition, to be angry about us not liking AI and they then decide to ban every name they come across. This community existing is insult enough for them. Thankfully they self-isolate for the most part.

[–] TribblesBestFriend@startrek.website 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

There’s at least two communities in there that I have interact with. I don’t think this mod is that petty. However there’s some « stable_Something » that ban me for being here. Meh 🤷‍♀️

[–] ell1e@leminal.space 13 points 1 week ago (7 children)

are you saying people here may have been banned by communities without even knowing? fascinating :o I wouldn't even know how to check that

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 23 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I was banned from a whole bunch of AI slop communities for 'persistent trolling' ... but I'd never posted to any of them, so ... yes. They ban you preemptively.

Yes, but its not a problem. Usually the mod just bans you from their personal AI dumping ground.

Oh nooooooo I'm banned from the septic tank I didn't want to see in the first place oh noooook

You claim to hate AI in real life but like AI in SciFi. Curious.

My dude, you're in a subculture that basically revolves around human art and creativity. Get out of your ass.

[–] seathru@quokk.au 17 points 1 week ago (4 children)

bdzer0's claim to be anarchist yet wholly embracing AI is some cognitive dissonance that I cannot wrap my head around.

[–] Famko@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (8 children)

Genuinely my biggest gripe with their entire instance. How do they not realize that by using LLMs you rob yourself of the chance to gain new skills in art or coding?

Beep Boop Ban

[–] shani66@ani.social 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Man DBzer0 really sucks. That's the one place I've been mass banned from (although it is because there was a troll using my name, but they never even responded to an unban request), I should check if it applies to the ai dumping communities too.

[–] arotrios@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

This isn't about AI - that's just an excuse.

What they really didn't want was a Tribble infestation, and well, given your username...you can see why they might want you to keep your distance...

Yeah, where is my ship computer anyway? The duotronic circuits, Holodeck Moriarty, an LCARS panel in the hallway and a pad in my readyroom? Why do I have to constantly refill the coffee beans, empty the collection container, do the descale program and the machine doesn't just provide me with "coffee, black" whenever I like? Feels like it's handing out even more quests to me than any Voyager storywriter could imagine. I'm also waiting for ages on tablets which can just flick over the app and data to my colleagues like in Stargate SG1.

Edit: Also dunno, I can't remember how in Star Trek, all the AI is done by big, nasty corporations. Gobbles up half the hardware so it becomes unaffordable to people and they build a big, dirty gas powered datacenter next to Picard's family's wineyard. And then Voyager's ship computer ceases to work the moment they drop out of wifi range?! Did I miss those episodes?

[–] Exatron@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

These people understand Star Trek is fictional, often takes place on quasi-military vessels, and depicts a society that has some significant differences from our own, right?

A friend has compared generative AI to the electric monks from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective agency.

I've found that the AI chatbots feel a lot like the Genunine People Peronalities from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Oh no, AI slop will be removed from your feed? However will you survive‽

[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 22 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

And yet Star Trek still had to have a human being repeat all what the A.I. was saying to make sure that it wasn't shite.

LCARS was a data access and retrieval system capable of doing calculations and simulations. It was not, I REPEAT, was not "artificial intelligence". It did not try to act or sound sentient, it simply responded to commands and ran programs.

The computers in Star Trek didn’t (normally) hallucinate, so they’re definitely not LLMs.

Obviously I’m not enough of an AI hater cause I ain’t been banned from shit.

[–] thenextguy@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Most people aren’t anti ai, but rather anti llm.

[–] incentive@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 week ago

one of the true crimes in this whole saga is the obscuring of ai/llm, on top of convincing people llms think

The computers in Star Trek are fictional. They work because the plot needs them too. They do not resemble a large language program because they don't resemble anything. You might as well say CSI: Miami's enhance image computer is AI.

The mod who typed that up might as well just declare from the rooftops, "I fell for a Silicon Valley marketing trick of describing software with a sci-fi tropes."

[–] PurpleFanatic@quokk.au 13 points 1 week ago

Badge of fucking honor.

Isn't "post-scarcity society" a big part of star trek too? Weird to claim you are a star trek fan while defending "scarcity generator 3000."

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 10 points 1 week ago

Everytime they try AI systems in trek it starts blowing up starships.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago

I don't remember “the computers” being AI. Holograms and androids? Sure. But for the computers be that level of AI would throw Trek into dystopia.

[–] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago

Being banned from these cesspools should be a badge of honor.
